St Augustine grass. In Cypress

I've got a lot of seemingly dead loose grass on/in the yard. Meaning, if I lightly pulled on the grass, clumps of blades would come out.

Do I rake that stuff out or do I leave it? I'm worried about it being too thick for a good sprouting of the new grass.

I had good grass last year. This year I racked my thatch and half of my tiny front yard came up.

I pondered on whether or not to resod and have decided that this will help me save money on my watering bill.

Lower your mower two notches and double mow it. Put out fertilizer,water it in. Raise mower up one notch and mow as needed for two weeks, then raise it back to your normal height and continue as usual.

I'd like the roots deeper to be honest.

I know if I de thatch I will lose a ton of my cover.

I just don't know if its the right thing to do or not.

I was told by my local Ag Ext. Ofc to not dethatch till around May. I am wondering if you have raked up good grass that appeared dead?

I wonder if anyone else has info on when to dethatch?

I didn't think you're supposed to mechanically de thatch st augustine. it pulls up all the stolons.

Do not rake or dethatch it as it will pull up stolons. Mow it shorter to clean it up and let sunshine do its thing.

Or, replace with Bermuda and don't worry about dying grass anymore.
