Any recommendations on where to get a good quality fire pit for the patio? My girlfriend loves to sit around the fire, no matter how cold or hot it is ouside. Not looking for a cheapy from Wally World either.

No idea how good they are or the cost but I saw some in the entryway of Academy tonight. In Temple.

Buccees. I priced a lot of fire pits when buying one for my wife last year. Good quality for the price. And many come with a grate you can swing over the coals to cook. Win win for me. Wife got a fire pit, I got an outdoor open fire grill.

Build one out of bricks or rocks etc

The metal ones you buy at lowes and HD are throw away.

Go to a feed store or road side junk/antique place and buy the heaviest one the make.

Buy the thickest metal you can

or

I got one with a grate from Bucees and built a paver wall around. We love it. My backyard is looking good now, except no plants due to the bipolar weather.

I'm considering doing something like this:

Buccees for me too..

Tree Hugger:

2 things about that design:

1) Air Flow. I can't tell from the picture, but I would think getting a good breeze across a fire deep in that pit would be hard to keep from smoking out the whole time.

2)Cleaning out ash. Might not be very easy.

After buying all those bricks, working a good base, setting the stones etc - IMO, id rather spend $350 at Buccess and be done with it. And have a much larger cooking surface.

Edited my post above to follow rule 1. Mine is the same as the one shown in AggieDan's post but wife wanted pavers around it. I think mine was 42 inch or something.

I had this Smith & Hawken one for several years and just gave it to my brother. It's inexpensive.

The rib just got me this one for Christmas:

Neither were the one's I truly wanted byt we don't have the space for the permanent stone/brick pit and I didn't want a 300 pound welded pit.

Kdub, that is the exact firepit area I've been wanting to build at my place for a while now. About how much did all that cost, if you don't mind my asking.

I'd like to get some info also Kdub? Looks like what we're thinking about.

It may be tomorrow before I can get back with a decent estimated cost. I can say it sucked carrying all the weight around. I think I estimated about 750lbs of paver moved from store to truck to backyard. About 2200lbs of crushed granite moved from truck to backyard (doesn't look like it but it is). And not sure but I think about 300lbs of edging paver....all by myself. Wasn't a weekend project, but maybe over three weeks or so. I had planned on starting a thread about it but never got around to it and the yard looks bland now with dead plants.

That emoticon is for the heavy work involved.

Next house will have space like Kdub's yard.

I love our house but we've got a tiny yard. We've got a big patio (about 50% covered) but having little man's trampoline and other big outside toys prevent having the built-in fire pit, etc.

That's why I'm dead-set on having a big-ass yard at the next house.

Got this one on Amazon a while back to replace an academy special that fell apart, and we love it. Good sturdy material, comes with a cover. And if you want, you can fork out a little extra $$ and get the TAMU version:

KDubAg, last question for you. How is that outdoor TV of yours weather protected? I have been thinking about putting one on our back patio as well but not sure what kind of protection is necessary.
KDubAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Mn...it's not 100% protected from weather. I built the cabinet to block any direct water penetration from rainfall. The cabinet sits under the eve of the house so that helps. But moisture will obliviously get in there with the humidity we have here. I've left it outside all year long for ~two years and had no problems with the tv until end of summer last year.

I originally bought the tv used for $100 and it was already a couple years old before I got it. Then had it for about two years outside before it finally went out. Instead of buying new one, I took the code it flashed, located a $65 board on eBay and installed it myself this past fall. Still works now.

Tell me what you want and I will build you a fire pit. You pick the size, material thickness and design. Any accessories you would like name it and I will try to accommodate.

As far as the TV's in humidity goes, I have something to add.

We have a fishing cabin in Shoalwater Flats (Seadrift area) about 300 ft from the water. We would kill power to everything in the cabin except for the fridge and freezer since we'd be gone for a few weeks at a time. We went through 3 TVs in 6 years, indoors with no climate control while gone. One day, it dawned on me about heat signature and the effect on moisture.

So, we left the TV powered, but "off". The last one has been flawless longer than the last three put together. If you have a TV protected from direct moisture, leaving it "plugged in" in the standby state can make it last MUCH longer.

KDUB how much did you pay for the fire pit and stones?
KDubAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
^Good to know Old Sarge. I put all my outside outlets on a switch in the garage. Maybe I'll keep the one with the tv switched on.

For those that wanted a cost. I couldn't find the receipts but I think these estimates are close.

Cedar Wood for the upright pergola..~$1600
http://lucascedar.com/

Cedar Wood for the deck ~$800-900
same place as above

cast iron pit from Bucees ~$450

crushed granite ~$135 (approx 1 ton)
http://www.customstone.com/locations.php

Pavers for pit wall and bench ~$450 (Home Depot)
http://www.homedepot.com/b/Outdoors-Garden-Center-Landscaping-Pavers-Step-Stones/Pavestone/N-5yc1vZbx4bZ411
My ideas came from http://www.pavestone.com/

Edger pavers ~$75 ($0.09/lb)
http://www.alamostone.com/ off Kirkwood in Stafford, TX

Cedar adirondack chairs ~$400
http://www.amazon.com/Lakeland-Mills-Cedar-Lounge-Natural/dp/B000GB8JQ0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1394134283&sr=8-3&keywords=cedar+adirondack+chairs

Dog ~free but vet bills and food $$$

I hope this helps. I also got landscape lights the edge that you can't really see in the pics either.

The Pavestone company actually has a fire pit kit that you can get at Home Depot as well but the pit was smaller than I wanted it to be. So I went and got a pit at Bucees and used Pavestone plans to get an idea how much stone I would need. I still under estimated and had to go back. I use liquid nails to glue the stone together. I left a little wiggle room between the stone and pit, so if I really wanted, with the help of another person (maybe two), I could pull the iron pit straight up and move it if I ever leave.

It's going to be a sad day when I have to move and leave this after all the work I did.

What do you do about rainfall with this Bucees pits? Does it drain through?
KDubAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Drumboy,

The bucee pits have a hole so they do drain. I don't think all Bucees have these pits for sell. I had to drive down to Wharton County (I think that's where I went) to get it.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
They sell them at the new bucees on 290 between Waller and Hempstead.

I stopped by buccees out in Waller to get a fire pit, but they're so dang expensive. You can go to pretty much any pit maker in Houston and get one for that much...
