Gotta agree with schmellba's original comment about the holier than thou attitudes displayed by some here.

The OP wasn't asking for anyone's personal opinions on the ethics of these hunts. So why the hell can't people keep their judgmental comments to themselves? If you don't agree ethically with these hunts.... fine. If you choose not to use animals for target practice.... fine. But can you just keep your comments to yourself about it? Sheesh....

Own a yeti? Great... but the OB holy rollers will mock you for it. Drive a Chevy/Ford? Awesome.... but watch out for the Ford/Chevy titty babies to bag on you for it. Don't own 15 pairs of Costas or Maui Jims? Good luck fitting in here without the official OB uniform glasses. Go on Argentinian dove hunts? Sounds like fun to me... but here come the PETA wannabes (BTW, the same folks who like ventilating feral hogs no less).

I swear... this board is going to ****.

Rogue, I agree completely, this is an "each to his own" sort of thing. I also think it likely that the people in Argentina are better placed to decide wether these dove are destructive pests or not. I've always noticed that most people who take issue with perceived wastes when killing hogs don't live somewhere that they have to deal with the damage caused by the hogs. I do have to say though that the OP did seem to have some questions as to the ethics of these hunts, and in mentioning that it seemed a bit wasteful to him opened the thread to conversation and opinion on the ethics. Now if some of those opinions are "holier than thou" or not I guess is another matter for each to decide.

The record I have read about is 15,208 doves in a single day down there. It was set by a guy fro m Houston.

18 doves a minute for 14 hours per the Field and Stream article.

quote:
Breeze set his record with four Winchester Super X3 20 gauge semiautos. He had two loaders working and they used three guns with a fourth as a backup. Breeze had tried other brands of guns and been frustrated by failures to fire with the Argentine RD or Fiocchi ammo that is not as reliable as the stuff we get in the U.S. Winchester did supply him the guns, but that doesn’t change the fact that they worked very well indeed for him, as his record attests. Being 20 gauge gas guns they did not kick much, and just as important, they were light.

This board isn't going to hell.

This kind of ecosystem management is just against what a lot of us believe in as hunters and outdoor sportsman.
