How much fence are you repairing? Where is it located?

yeah, seriously.

I see those fence stretchers and mending clamps, is that what most people use. or is there an easier/cheaper/better method?

not much, so no need for it to be hired out.

just few areas where trees have fallen across it and stretched it

Wire stretcher. Run you about $35.

Just don't ask me and tx4guns to demonstrate it, unless you want comedy to ensue.

OK, forget the clamps... use wire stretchers and another piece of wire as a splice. Make loops on each end of the existing wire (where you cut it). Wire one end of the spice into an existing loop end and and get it hand tight first, THEN use the wire stretchers to stretch the splice out and wire it down tight. Most people make the mistake of never stretching out the splice.

Don't do loops if at all possible. Untwist the wires and splice them together, cooling piece A over piece B. If the wire is old and more brittle, you will need to space the coils out further.

You can improvise with a comealong, too. You just have to have a wire loop to hook onto at the end of your strand.

The two grip fence stretcher is all you need if you are just doing a few wires now and then.

The three grip will help grip the wire after you have jacked the stretcher all the way in...therefore giving you continuous stretching without re-setting everything. This three grip stretcher is un-necessary until you are doing a bunch and need to save a few minutes here and there.

If you already have a come-a-long, you can also stretch wire with a Speeco Wire Gripper from Tractor Supply. You do need an anchor to stretch from though, like an end-post or corner-post. You can also use two Speeco Wire Grippers...one at each end of your come-a-long.

With all of that, I use a plain two-grip wire stretcher for 90% of my fence repair, but I keep several other tools like the Speeco handy.

I also have a Maasdam Wire Grip which I hate because it never seems to fit into the tight space you need to stretch and wrap a wire.

Very carefully is how. I have a picture of a piece of barbed wire stuck in my dads finger from one day of fixing a fence

I need to take a series of pictures showing how to stretch a splice with a hammer, easier and faster than a stretcher. Old cowboy trick shown to me a long time ago, oddly enough by an old cowboy...
