I use my 7.62 PredatAR for hunting and would like to break up the all black a little. Thinking about adding FDE index clips and grip adapter panels. Possibly get a stock and grip in FDE, as well. I hunt in very open terrain. Sometimes I even have to carry my own brush. Here are a few pictures of my rifle in it's "native" environment.

Had to carry a cedar branch with me on this hunt. Killed 5 doe inside a 30 minute span.

This photo gives you an idea of the open terrain.

My son had a good evening hunt a couple weeks ago. We plopped down beside some sparse brush, and he killed a buck and a doe in a 15 minute span. They both were inside 30 yards. I guess that probably is proof that I may not REALLY need to worry about rifle camo.

No suggestions but I've been wanting to buy a LaRue 7.62. How do you like it ? Is it worth the $$$ and the wait to get it??

I had an 7.62 OBR first. Fantastic rifle that was a tack driver. But, I really use my rifles for hunting. The OBR was quite heavy with optics. So, when the PredatAR came out, I ordered a 5.56 and 7.62. They are very accurate and fulfill my requirement for hunting. The cost is worth it to me. May not be for others. I did not have to wait nearly as long as folks are having to today. But, I would wait as long as it takes, if I needed another.

If you're not afraid of spray paint there are some good tutorials online about how to paint your rifle. I used a base coat of coyote tan, alternated spraying patterns of brown and od green, then stood back and oversprayed(standing about 3ft away) OD green to blend it all together.

Check out lightfighter.net, m4carbine.net and ar15.com for some ideas.

Micky, what about those water dip applied decals?? I have a .223AI/700P action in a Manners stock I was going to have airbrushed - now I'm thinking of trying the decal route. I just wish they had GameGuard. And I should check again - it's been a while since I looked, it may be available now.

Rattle can flat camo colors using natural foliage as stencils is the cheapest route. I would only do this if you have no plans on selling rifle. Can get some really cool looks for cheap.

Gun Skins (gunskins dot com) has some heat applied decal like stuff. Cheap and removable. I did my Ruger American in Multicam.

Log--the last pic is almost verbatim what im shooting for with my current build. What kind of paint is that? Im leaning towards duracoat magpul fde, though I realize its not an exact match with magpul furniture.

Every time log posts pics I realize I'm losing the "he who dies with the most toys wins" race...

Good stuff. I do not plan on selling any of my guns. So, I am not really opposed to paint. Thanks for the replies.

I did this last year to my Savage .17HMR with matte camo paint from walmart. It worked really well. Just take the bolt out and cover any openings as well as the scope lenses.

Here's the finished product.

I used Brownells Gun-Kote on the upper, lower, barrel, port door, trigger guard, and Larue HG. I used the rattle can version, but they don't offer it in Matte Dark Earth anymore. It is still available in the airbrush version though. Spray on, then bake in the oven. Very tough and durable, but if you get it on too thick in areas, it will tend to chip (not flake), especially on the high points. Thin coats are key, and are probably more controllable with an airbrush.

I've Duracoated a couple ARs and a pistol and they turned out well. If the product you decide on does not come in an aerosol can, just get a Preval sprayer. Not as good as an airbrush, but good enough for a $10 investment.

It's your rifle, but I would not dream of a do it myself job on a rifle of that cost. At least without practicing a bit on something much cheaper. I just can't see spending thousands on a rifle and optics and then buying a couple cans of $10 spray paint and going to town.

I did a kayak for duck hunting that turned out well, but I didn't expect perfection and it isn't flawless.

You can obviously afford a professional job, so why not take it in to someone and have it come out exactly as you would want it to?

I guess the flip side of that is you can obviously afford to buy a new one if you do it yourself and it doesn't turn out the way you want it to.
