Thanks in advance.

I allowed the batteries to corrode, and cannot retrieve the bottom (of three) battery. Thoughts. Ideas?

Shop press? Seriously, I think they'll give you a new one if you contact them, this problem is so common.

I've used water to break up the fouling on car battery terminals, I'd imagine it would work here as well. Just remove as much of the light and reflector housing as possible before doing it. Although there's probably a better way that someone else can come up with. Maybe a magnet?

If the batteries aren't too old maglight will replace the light for you. Info on there website about leave batteries in it and ship back to them. I think it only applies if the batteries aren't expired though could be wrong.

Other way would be to take the lens/blub part apart as well as the back end and use a dowel rod.

Can't seem to take the bulb holder out in order to drive it out. So not sure your suggestion is viable. It appears I'm gonna hafta tap into the battery with a tool (like a corkscrew), but have none.

Second on the Coke. It eats the corrosion.

Tried soda n water. Soaked it with liquid soap as well, and got some to come around the battery, but it's stuck tight!

From their website. This has changed. They use to fix them if they were duracall and everready batteries (If I recall correctly). They had a deal to get reimbursed by the battery mfg.

quote:
I can’t get the batteries out of my flashlight. They're stuck inside. How do I change them? Is this covered by my warranty?

When this happens, it almost certainly means that the batteries have leaked and are stuck inside the barrel. Note: Batteries normally swell before leaking causing them to get stuck inside the barrel.

Mag Instrument does not warrant against battery leakage. If the flashlight has been damaged by leakage of batteries, do not return the flashlight to Mag but determine what brand of battery caused the damage and follow the battery manufacturer’s instructions about how to make a damage claim.

For warranty returns: Send the flashlight (postage or shipping prepaid) to Mag Instrument, 2001 South Hellman Avenue - 50600, Ontario, California, USA 91761-8019, Attention: Warranty/Repair Department, or to an authorized Mag Warranty Service Center. Include a check or money order for $5.00 (which includes the cost of packing and shipping the product back to you).

Please also include a letter with your name, address, phone number and description of the problem. For the location of an authorized Mag Warranty Service Center in your area, consult the retailer where you purchased the flashlight or see the customer service section at www. maglite.com.

For your protection and to expedite handling and/or postal claims, we recommend that all returns be insured and sent Certified and/or Return Receipt Requested. Do not send batteries with flashlights.

Straight coke or dish soap should help loosen it up. I had the same problem and I ended up drilling into the battery with a long drill bit, just deep enough into the battery to get a good hold. I tried everything else before, but it came on out soon after. The vibrations from drilling should help loosen it up too.

will lightly tapping around the outside of the case not help to dislodge some of the corrosion?

Once the battery is removed the corrosion will have to be removed from the contacts.

It's possible the Mag Light might be destined for the recycle bin if the corrosion is excessive.

Drill 1/4" hole in battery. Thread 1/4" lag bolt into battery. Use pliers, vice grips, vice, or some other tool to extract battery.

You better hope that the bottom one is the only one that leaked. If the acid got into the bulb head, it is toast. If that happens, you have a good host for a Form 1 though, so there's that.

Flashlight technology has come a LONG way since the mag light. Check out Noxx flashlights. Small, less than $50, uses AA's and incredibly bright.

Maglights aren't the cat's meow anymore in terms of flashlight technology - but they still carry one advantage over most others - the ability to use it as an effective club.

That's why I still keep one in the truck.

If batteries leak in a maglite it's toast anyway. Aluminum doesn't care for acid.

Also. Drilling into a battery is not the brightest idea. Don't forget it's a chemical reaction that provides the potential difference.

For me, it wasn't the fact that I needed it for a flashlight. It's one of the least bright flashlights I have, but it's hard to just throw away a perfectly good body Maglight.

Remove the rubber clicky button.
Loosen hex screw under button.
Remove bulb retaining c-clip.
Slide out bulb/switch assembly.

You now have a battery filled tube.
Use a hammer and long hard object to remove battery.
Rehone tube with sand paper, or whatever you have handy.

Enjoy.

I've had luck slamming the caca out of the ass end on a flat surface. Tapping it gently repeatedly didn't work so I went to plan B.

I have... HAD one in my truck (GDMFSOB) that didn't work. Good emergency club, hammer, paperweight, bottle opener, small cheater bar...

Naveronski, your suggestion is an accurate description of the technique I verified with google, but I believe the bulb/switch assembly can only be removed by pushing it out the bottom of the tube, but alas, the stuck (swollen) battery won't allow that. Haven't done so yet, but I believe the suggestion of drilling a pilot hole, then threading a lag screw is my most likely method. Haven't located the necessary 6" x 1/8" drill bit yet.

I appreciate the suggestions and interest shown.

BG: Look for the tips for one of these:
http://www.goscoot.com/images/Mammoth800/C-clip%20-%2055mm%20(between%20rear%20diff.%20%26%20rear%20axle)_Large.jpg

That should be what's preventing it from coming out the front - or it was on mine.

A frickin snap ring? Damn! I think I can make one out, tho it doesn't have the same "holes" on the tips. I've got a little rust that's obscuring my ability to get a good look at it.
How important is loosening that screw? I haven't located that tiny Allen wrench yet.

17.00 for a 2D and 20.00 for a 4D at Home Depot.

And I agree, so many flashlights blow Mag's out of the water these days, when the two I own now crap out, I will not replace them.
