December in Illinois, outdoors. I am thinking insulated coveralls, but am in need of some suggestions. TIA.

Insulated coveralls are definitely the warmest, but I sweat like crazy in 'em in all but the coldest temps.

I prefer the versatility of insulated bib overalls and a coat so that I can choose a coat suitable to the temperature (or shed it altogether). Just a thought.

If you are working in them all day, I would recommend Carhartt or Walls. Berne is also a good brand. I have had the same Carhartt coveralls since I was 16, I'm 25 now and they still have plenty of life. Granted I don't wear them everyday during the winter, but they get used quite a bit each year.

I had insulated coveralls once. The trouble I had with them is they restricted my movement. I now use insulated overalls with matching insulated jacket and the non-attached pullover hood. I like this combo much better. There is zero binding when I am bending over or lifting something. When I get to sweaty I can always take off the jacket. All 3 were carhart.

I would second the bibs and coat suggestion. A lot easier to vary the weight of the layers you wear on top with the bibs.

I rock the bibs

Coveralls may be warmer, but you'll wish you had bought bibs later on. Much easier to layer when its not freezing cold, plus there's no worse feeling than having to dump in the woods knowing you have coveralls on.

Are you moving around or sitting still?

At any rate bibs>coveralls.

Check out Berne Workwear and Duluth Trading. And Carhartt of course. I bought Berne because they had my oddball size and have been very happy with them.

Another vote for bibs. Much easier to take off the jacket and keep working as you warm up. Also offers a bit more core warmth when you have bibs and a jacket imo.

Not too much experience in those temperatures but have worked in frozen food and went with bib overalls and coat for the reasons stated above.

With lots experience working outdoors in brutally cold weather, I can recommend the insulated bibs. If you get Carhart or Dickies bibs, get the ones with the black quilted insulation, its warmer than the red version. If you can, get a pair where the leg unzips up to the hip rather than stopping at the knee. It makes them much easier to pull on and off over clothes and snow boots.
