So I am probably going to be buying one this afternoon. I have probably done more research than I care to admit on what I should get and I keep coming back to this one.

From what I can tell it is a solid gun that has good durability. Some have had issues with the gun early on when it first rolled out, but the issues seem to be all cleared up by now. It is not on the level of an 870 wingmaster, but is still overall a very solid gun. Anyone have any other insight?

Primary uses are the occasional dove hunt and home defense. Thank you everyone, I look forward to your responses.

I have the DU version of this gun. I've only had one issue with it which was while dove hunting the bolt got stuck in the open position at one point. When I finally got it to close it worked fine. When I got home I broke it down to clean it and found a small burr on the BCG which I filed down and cycled it about 50 times with no issues. I love mine. I patterned it with 7 shot Remington dove load with mod. choke and at about 25 - 35 yards it held a pattern about 12-18 inches. I've since went with the imp. choke.

Mine was stiff as hell when I first bought it. Lots of oiling and cycling got it pumping pretty smooth.

I bought one about 2 weeks ago as a birthday present for myself. I went out and dove hunted with it and it jammed every single time. I cleaned it, tried every type of brand/size shell imaginable, and it stilled jammed! I took it back to gander mountain and the guy working there was real nice. He actually exchanged it for another one. The new one does the exact same thing. My dove and teal season have basically been a wash because of this gun. I would highly advise you NOT to get this gun. Mine is an absolute POS and it is no doubt the worst gun I have ever bought. DO NOT BUY THIS GUN.

Nova is a much better option IMO.

Why the 887? If you want a Remington pump why not go for the tried and true 870? They have a 3.5" mag version too if you want.

You have to lube the ever-living crap out of it to get it to run properly. I got mine to start working after some frustration....

I bought one, from someone on here, that won it at a DU banquet. A few thoughts from someoen who used it every weekend for two duck seasons in saltwater.

1. You cannot put enough oil in this gun. In fact, ive resorted to using oil and corrision x, as the corrosion proofing remington is so proud of has started to fail inside the gun

2. I am a huge guy. 6'5 300lbs. and this thing rattles my bones when i shoot 3.5" shells out of it.

3. Failures: The gun jams if it doesnt have enough oil. It also fails to dump a new shell into the chamber sometimes. If its not oiled enough, it can also take hercules himself to pump that gun

I bought the gun to be used in conjunction with my Benelli SuperNova that had 4 years of use on it already. Essentially, i didnt want to wear my supernova completely out, and wanted to put it to pasture slowly, and since i got a good deal on the 887 - it was logical to haev a backup gun when i had guests. ALthough a decent gun, the Benelli Nova is in better shape, and has more years of use on it then the 887, as it was used almost every weekend last year by guests, and my brother. I would pay the extra $125-$175 for the benelli nova, or get an 870 in super magnum and camo that way it has some fo the same rust protection features the 887 is proud of.

But, to each his own.

Have a buddy with one, he has had to send it back twice because both times the it jammed in the open position, so luckily no shell was stuck.

There was absolutely nothing we could do to get it closed again.

So I didn't end up getting it. I have started to reconsider the 887. Some due to the issues people have said here and elsewhere, but mostly I want a good reliable and rugged gun that I don't have to baby for it to work well.

Also, I want something that has good aftermarket products so if I ever want to customize it to make it more tactical, I can do so with relative ease.

So I think I am going to go with the 870 express synthetic with a 26" barrel.

Anyone think that is a bad idea?

870 wing master if you've got the funds

But nothing wrong with that gun. I've got plenty of friends with 870s that all work well

I love the 870's, but I've seen several newer 870 expresses that seem to have a chamber that is too tight, locking up the action after a round is fired and the spent shell is stuck in the chamber. At first I thought it was the cheap aluminum cased ammo my buddy was shooting (expanding more), but it did the same thing with my Remington heavy dove ammo I was using. From what I've heard, this isn't that uncommon of a problem, so I'd take it out and make sure it shoots well before taking it out hunting.

The first shotgun I ever owned was a 12ga 870 Express 3". I had the aforementioned lock-up issues. It would ruin hunts for me. At that time, I usually needed my 2nd shot and I rarely had it. I'd have to hold onto the slide fore end with both hands and jam the butt into the ground to get the spent casing to eject.

If you're dead set on an 870, I'd get a wingmaster. Otherwise, do yourself a favor and look hard at the Benelli.
