The wife and I are going to see Charlie Robison at Gruene Hall this Saturday. I have a few questions...

Is the GristMill the best/good place to eat there? I ate there sometime around 1988, but I hear there are crazy waits these days.

Can you smoke cigarettes still in Gruene Hall?

Gracias!

Gristmill is most likely the best bet for a good meal, they have lots of seating, so give it a few minutes even if it is a wait.

Not sure on the smoking, but I would imagine you might have to go outside the building. It's a small building, so it's not that big of a deal.

Thanks, I don't typically smoke but I was looking at the pictures online and I saw ashtrays everywhere and thought I would partake because it is a rare treat to smoke indoors these days.

We plan to eat at the gristmill and have a room across the street in a b&b.

I will be there this weekend, too. Gristmill is my favorite eatery in Gruene. NB has some awesome food in some of the downtown places. Phoenix Burger, Macadoos, Liberty Bistro, and Myron's are all solid, some pricey. Clear Springs is good, too.

No cigarettes in the hall. They have picnic tables outside for that.

I used to prefer the Gruene River Grill when my wife was going to Texas State and we would to on the weekends. I always thought Gristmill was more atmosphere than anything. Good food, yes, but there's better within a 3 minute walk.

Gruene river grill has better food than gristmill and usually no wait because no one goes there. And yes you can smoke in gruene hall. Should be a perfect night for a good concert with the weather this weekend.

GRG is good, too. Different food, but good. We go back and forth between those 2 and Mozie's when we eat in Gruene, which is about every other month.

Gruene River Grill definitely has better food IMO. If you like a good steak, try the balsamic ribeye. It's likely to be one of the best you've ever had.

My last trip to Gristmill will be my last. Food was shockingly average (that's being generous), wait staff was terrible, and parking is ridiculous. Lots of better places to eat.

Gristmill and gruene river grill are both very good. With good weather gristmill just has such a great atmosphere. Mozie's is right across from the hall and is a lot of fun with great bar food.

It's gruene. It's the weekend. There will be a wait everywhere. Just have a beer and don't worry about that.

I'll be at Gruene Hall too, but on Friday evening for Ray Price.

IMO, gruene river grill, cantina del rip, and mozies all have better food than gristmill.

More casual is Cooper's BBQ right on Hwy 46.

Thanks for all of the replies. Sounds like we will hit GRG or Mozie's if the Gristmill is crazy when we get there.

I wish I had the time to see Ray Price on Friday. I see that it is sold out as well.

Try this place in New Braunfels: http://www.huisache.com/

For what you get, the prices are super cheap. No reservations, so there can be a wait, but it's a great place to have a drink and bs on the waiting lawn. There's also junk shops for women to look at junk while you wait.

Like others have said, you go to Gristmill for the atmosphere. You can't go wrong there, but food there has always been pretty average.

Gruene River Grill and Mozies have much better food, with GRG being a nicer place and Mozies very casual.

Everytime I have to visit New Braunfels for work, I make sure the throw the cooler in the truck and I call the Gristmill and order 2 tenderloin sandwiches for the wife and I to eat that night.

If you have never checked it out...the Phoenix Saloon has some awesome history.

http://www.thephoenixsaloon.com/history.php

- Claims of the world's first chili powder
- Operated a brewery underground during prohibition (still has tunnels that lead out from the bar into downtown NB)

Sometimes the Gristmill will smoke baby back ribs in the summer. They can be excellent. There's nothing like a hot summer day of floating the river, grubbin' on some ribs at the Gristmill, then catching a show at Gruene Hall.

Gristmill has been very dissappointing the last few times we have gone. I won't be going back for a while...there are other good restaurants in town.

Seems like kind of a women's lunch place but I'm sure its good.

After looking at the website, one of the owners was my sunday school teacher a long time ago.

Mozies! Chips, salsa, guac, burgers and beer and it'll be 1/2 the price of GRG or Gristmill.

Huisache is AMAZING! We had the brie appetizer the last time we were there and it was great. We always include it on our trips.

Lamb's Rest Inn is the best B&B around there in my humble opinion.

Gristmill was nice when we floated the river and needed Sodolak/Longhorn Steakhouse type food. Not my favorite anymore. Gristmill and Adobe Verde are for the tourists.

Gruene Tea Room is good as well. They do take reservations.

There is nowhere to eat in NB that is 'AMAZING'

Huisache, McAdoos, & Myron's are all better than average. GRG is better than Gristmill, but, neither are going to blow your mind. CFS at Gristmill is nice for nostalgia. Mozies is decent and has a good atmosphere.

Don't bother with Mexican, but, if you cant stop yourself try the place at 306 and Hunter road.

If you are looking for a great breakfast, try Fork and Soon. Buttermilk Cafe and Union station both suck even though locals who don't know better will try and tell you differently

Catfish museum is better than "good."

Huisache is very good, not amazing but very good. It has been a landmark eatery for a long time, imo.

Macadoo's is owned by a former papadeaux chef and is in the old post office so that is cool.

Granzin's on san antonio st for bbq, I prefer the bbq tacos.

Huisache Grill. I remember when they opened it back around 1996 and we'd go every other week. Miss that place.
