If you have a lot of sidewalk and driveway to do just get a cheap electric edger and be done with it.

He comes on Friday afternoon before we get home and the yard looks fabulous all weekend.

I use an Echo stick edger. It was about $200. Takes me no more than 5 minutes to do the front and back yard and the yard looks great. It's the way to go in my opinion.

Now my string trimmer... I bought the curved one not knowing any better. I hate that thing! I'm not even that tall (5'10) and I'm too tall for it. If I hold it "normally" I'd kick it as I walk in front of me. Wish I'd bought a straight trimmer.

Edger attachment for the gas trimmer FTW. That makes a professional edge.

Did 20 or so yards a week in high school, had the best results with a gas straight shaft weed eater

I've got a 40 year old 4 stroke gas powered metal blade edger, and it whips the crap out of any weedeater when edging. It cuts a perfect vertical angle and can dig into 3 inches of dirt with that blade... I'll use my echo 225 for quick edging jobs, but when it needs to be done right, the old gas edger is unbeatable.

If your line is breaking of on a bump has trimmer, check the brass inserts where the line comes out. If they are dirty clean them. They serve as a heat sink to keep the line from over heating at a high friction point. Also check them for burrs or dings that can wear on the line.

I use this and it does a great job. Yes, it's an extra piece of equipment, but I tried and failed with a weedeater. I figured the better looking lawn was worth the lost space in the garage.

ClickClack-what type of weedeater do you currently have? If it’s a cheap $99 one you bought at Walmart, then I would spend the extra money on a nice Stihl model (or Echo…I’m just biased towards Stihl because I have had great experiences with every piece of orange equipment I’ve bought).

Might check one of these two models out:

FS 55-R (Straight shafts work much better when using them upside down when edging)

If you already have a decent weedeater and don’t want to buy a new one….but you can’t do a good job edging with it, go buy one of these. I use mine for about 2 minutes each week. Make quick work and works flawlessly. Just keep the fuel fresh, use Sta-Bil or Star-Tron in the gas, change the spark plug every 2 years or so and these will last you for many many years!

Tip: Look at your neighbor's edging. I woulfd bet there is a neat little trench cut in the dirt between the grass and the sidewalk. To get a straight, neat cut you have to have this trench. It can be created with a powerul edger or you can cut one when the yard is wet. Once that trench is established the edging is a breeze. The deeper the trench the easier it will be to edge.

When we lived in Pasadena, I bought an edger at a garage sale that did the job perfectly. We don't need to edge at our house in Kyle. If you live near Austin, you can have the edger
