OK I know the movie is full of them but what would be your favorite?

I think mine is when the sand storm is coming:

Gus: Well Woodrow, this is where we find out if we was meant to be cowboys I reckon!

Woodrow: I reckon.

I'm misquoting, but my favorite is Gus saying "Just once, I'd like to shoot at an educated man." In response to the Latin quote on the sign.

After Woodrow nearly kills the man for whipping Newt he turns to the crowd and says "I don't like rude behavior in a man, I won't tolerate it"

After Deets dies... "I don't want to begin to think about all the things we should have done for this great man"

Gus dying... "It's been quite a party, ain't it.

Like you said, there are so many memorable quotes... so I'll just post one that hasn't been mentioned:

quote:
Woodrow: "You wanna think somethin', why don't you think that roof back up on that barn, 'stead of sittin in the shade all the time?"

The whole damn thing. I've watched the entire thing 4 times on this deployment. And I probably will again.

Woodrow: I never knew you to get excited about much, except biscuits.

Gus: Maybe.

Woodrow: And *****s! (Hoors)

Gus: I reckon them too.

Po Campo--My wife is in hell, where I sent her. She could make good biscuits, but her behavior was terrible.

Love that line.

Gus: Lorie darlin', life in San Francisco, you see, is still just life. If you want any one thing too badly, it's likely to turn out to be a disappointment.

The only healthy way to live life is to learn to like all the little everyday things, like a sip of good whiskey in the evening, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk, or a feisty gentleman like myself.

I had a friend pass away 2 weeks ago due to cancer (only 31 y.o.), and another one of our friends (his best friend) gave the eulogy. In it, he talked about this scene, and then went on to say this line multiple times in the middle of sharing stories of how our friend had indeed lived life to the fullest.

Very moving eulogy, really the best I have ever heard.

My favorite quote mainly because my dad says it all the time and i believe it. From Woodrow to Newt "while handing him his pistol": It is better to have that and not need it, then to need it and not have it.

Another one of my top ones is Gus reading Deets' headstone.

There are plenty of real names smattered into Lonesome Dove as well. I'm sure Larry McMurtry got a lot of ideas from early Ranger accounts, and I can almost guarantee you he used Early Settlers and Indian Fighters of Southwest Texas as a research tool to flesh out his characters.

2 of them:
As Gus is leaving with Pea Eye: "don't let the Indians get you while we're gone" then Jasper says" always kidding around ain't you ,Gus". Then Gus replies " who's kiddin?'"

And when Gus gets out of the river to go track Blue Duck "hell, Woodrow, don't I look ready?"

While I agree the book itself is excellent, you are really doing yourself a disservice not watching the mini-series...it has some of the BEST performances by Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones and keeps almost entirely to the same storyline of the books.
