I think it all depends based on the situation on how you were taught to drive.

Fast lane and you are slowing me down, I don't care how much water you spray or brake check me, you are gettin over. Brake checking only pisses me off more and generally results in closer tailgating.

If you are in traffic, have another lane to go around, or there is just no where for the person in front of you to go (car in front of them is driving slow) dent be a dick and tailgate.

And I also think tailgating is very subjective. Mostly older folks tend to be very sensitive to you driving behind them.

Maybe... ...and some of us older folks have lived long enough to have someone, who couldn't control his vehicle quite as well as he thought, run up our azz, destroying not one, but two or more cars in the process. Been there.

Tailgating is simply stupid.

Or maybe it's because the older folk has three kids in the car with him and tends to drive a bit more cautious than the punk that has little reason to live (Or does and is too stupid to know it).

Easy there, didn't mean to insult the older crowd. Just stating an observation.

To play devils advocate, how is hitting the brakes n the freeway, with a car full of kids, while someone is tailgating you a safe idea for anyone?

Trust me, run up on me and get close, I'm not moving over. You do that, and I'm not exactly sure how you are going to react.

The closer you tailgate me the slower I go

Maybe it was just the way I was taught to drive, but I never brake check someone. I Either speed up and get over or slow down if they are pissing me off.

Flashing the brake lights with a car load of kids is far different than "hitting the brakes". I can flash the brake lights and drop maybe 1 MPH? But if I DID have to slam on the brakes and someone is right on my rear, there in lies the bigger danger.

And your comment didn't insult me...just pointing out different mentalities of drivers due to situations and circumstances. While I don't like it when an old lady drives 25 MPH slower than everyone else on the highway I don't get mad at her because I understand that she doesn't trust her reactions and hand-eye coordination anymore.

...nor me.

...just pointing out the obvious - based on a personal experience with an unknown dumbazz and my now-trashed vehicle - for any among us who may be a bit short of what used to be called common sense.

If you're in the left lane and you're not passing, move over.

I'm just going to jump out and say you aren't a good driver and probably aren't safe to be on the road. Read your post. If you can't figure it out then I cannot help you

Speak for yourself. I am not a slow driver and ive had to brake check a few idiots. The looks of oh **** on their face is pretty priceless.

I usually drive somewhere between the speed limit + 5 mph, so I don't tend to have this issue unless I'm passing someone on a highway (I speed up if there is a car behind me in the left lane and get in the right ASAP). However, if I were being tailgated like the OP said, I would lay off the gas and just coast. They'll most likely pass me at that point.

Also, it drives me nuts if I come up behind someone in the left lane of a multiple lane highway with all other lanes clear and they will not move over. That is when I tend to be more aggressive and follow more closely than I should. I just don't want to fly by them in the right lane, even if it is clear, because I am not sure if they might make a sudden lane change. I'd rather make my appearance known and be ready for the brake check than have a car change into my lane and collide with me. FWIW, I've never honked/flashed my lights at someone in the left lane because they are going under the speed limit.

I am glad you identified my driving habits based on my post. Yes it is pretty obvious I drive quite aggressively.

That being said, I know my limits and treat other drivers with as much respect as they show me.

Am I crazy, reckless driver? Many that know me might agree with that assessment. But it was how I was taught to drive and has worked out pretty well for myself, dad and grandfather. I have driven a lot of miles for the amount of time I have been driving and although experience doesn't always equate to skill, I am by no means a bad driver.

At the end of the day, if I want to drive 8-10 over the speed limit on the highway (never in neighborhoods or back roads) it is my business. If you want to drive under or at the speed limit, by all means do so. I have no right to tell you how to drive or influence your driving behavior.

What I have a problem with is people that go out of there way to influence my behavior by brake checking me or trying to keep me from passing, when there is a very safe alternative of either slowing down or speeding up and letting me get over. I don't have a land grant to the fast lane and neither does anyone else.

Although you may not agree with the way I drive, based n my statements on this thread, I can promise you that I don't create any harm for anyone else by tailgating the hell out of them unless they are being a compete ass and doing so intentionally or without respect for other drivers.

Can't we all just get along?

I love the fact there's people on this thread talking about creating dangerous driving conditions, and in one instance causing an accident that could have killed someone, by break checking people, while griping about other peoples driving habits.

Unusually either take my foot off the accelerator and coast until they decide to pass or set cruise at 5-10mph under the speed limit. Either way they'll find someone else to tailgate.

Threw a donut out of my buddies sunroof when someone was tailgating his SUV. Saw a priceless facial expression when that chocolate covered donut stuck icing side down to his windshield.

I don't think anyone was saying that brake checking caused a wreck. I think he was saying that he got hit by someone that was being a jerk and following too close. You know...probably someone that had a lot of faith in their driving skills and was taught to drive that way by their father and grandfather and up to that point had never had a wreck due to them tailgating.

Tapping breaks until you get someone to hit you, and admitting you where intentionally break checking people. Ever heard the old saying"two wrongs dont make a right". Just asked a sgt, his response was "I'd file on both. One for following to close, the other for intentionally causing an accident"

So yeah, where did this accident occur?

Touché. I missed that post.

Yeah that's a bit harsh. The rest of us are mainly talking about it being just the briefest of warnings.

Yeah I was mainly talking about him. I tend to just turn my cruise off and start coasting till they pass, especially in heavy traffic.

When someone pulls out in front of me on a two lane road and starts driving slow, not even attempting to get up to the speed limit, causing me to throw on my brakes, lose my cruise control and travel substantially slower than I was, then I might follow them a little closer than they like. But my feelings are, if you didn't want someone tailgating you, you shouldn't have pulled out in front of them without speeding up.

FTR I do try to pass asap. When tailgated myself for no good reason I generally slow down until they pass.

This is pretty much how I handle it as long as I'm driving in the slow lane. I don't do brake checks very often, but I'm not speeding up for you and if you stay there long enough I just let off the accelerator (with the exhaust brake on my truck decelerates pretty quickly and with no brake lights). I slowed an 18 wheeler down to about 40 on I-35 one time because he wouldn't get off my bumper. Then we he finally decided to pass I sped back up to my cruising speed of 75. He tried to move over on me later down the highway as he passed but I saw it coming and just slowed down.

Road rage isn't really my thing. I'm typically armed and not interested in escalating anything.
