What do yall use? Bow? Shotgun? Rifle?

What do you think the best rifle caliber is for turkeys?

I prefer my bow. But i will also use a shotty gun. It's the same as my dove and duck gun. 870 Express. Wood / blued.

I am debating between my 10/22 and my bolt .223 this year.

yeah, probably not "sporting" to the turkey hunting purists,I am also not going to seat turkey but i am also not going to douse myself in turkey urine and use a combination of turkey feces and rabbit crap as face paint either.

If I decide to take the .223 and hit the field up by the creek, I won't even bother with a mask. Will get all camo'd up if I take the .22 though.

My trusty old Mossberg 835 camo with a 3.5" Winchester #6 shot. May be overkill, but it has killed a ton of birds.

they say the .17 hmr was developed for prairie dogs/ground squirrels which may be true, but it is imo the perfect turkey hunting rifle.

Has anyone heard of the can of corn trick?

Someone told me this during the past duck season.

1. Get a empty steel can, normally used for canned foods like corn, green beans, peas, ect. Place dried corn in it.
2. Place steel can full of corn at a distance you can hit with a shotgun.
3. Wait...
4. Turkey gets curious about can, pokes its head inside for the corn.
5. Blast the can of corn, decapitating the turkey and leaving a clean body of meat.
6. Profit?

Phillip, seems pretty ridiculous, but I guess if you are lazy or physically handicapped in some fashion and turkey hunt with a rifle you may as well go all out and try the can of corn trick.

Personally, I'll stick with my shoulder cannon. The pattern is tight enough on my gun that pellets in the body are rarely an issue.

I use a 3 1/2" 870 with a knox spec op stock to tame some of the recoil of the 2 1/4 oz shells. I had the 28" barrel shortened to 20" and it patterns well but I have a 23" factory barrel to try out.

Only killed one turkey in my life, only hunted on one place that had any turkey. The one i took was a nice Tom that had a 12 inch double beard. I shot him while deer hunting with a 7mm because that's what I had on me , unbelievably didn't mess up any meat.

Wait did op mean turkey HUNT or turkey SHOOT?

I've used my 270 and 22-250 shot them both in the head. Is using a rimfire legal? If so I'll use my .17 this weekend!
