I had a squib load in my Springfield Loaded 1911 last week. Any barrel/bushing makers you would recommend? Are 5" 1911 45 ACP barrels universal, or do I need to buy specific replacement Springfield parts?

that sucks. care to tell more of the story? did it not fully exit the barrel and you fired the gun again?

Send it to the Springfield custom shop for a replacement.

Good 1911 barrels have to be fitted to the gun. There are drop in replacements but accuracy can be a bit worse with them.

Just to make sure, you did try to fire again/do something else to damage it, right?

If so, you might have done more than just damage the barrel - and its best to send it to someone to check it.

If all that happened was a squib, just knock the stuck bullet out w. a rod.

I believe it was an undercharged or no charged load that became lodged in the barrel. I am very aware and watchful for this sort of thing, and I really didn't notice anything until the slide became locked and would not cycle (barrel was split and caused an interference fit with bushing. Similar to fitting a roll pin.)

These loads were 230 gr HP lead (Rainer) with a few grains of W231. I need to go look at my records to see exactly what it was, 4-5 grains. It is a load I run quite often. I'm just shooting steel at 40 yards, so I keep everything low power, maybe 750-800 fps.

I have some good pics of the barrel post- mortem, if you're interested.

I did, and the barrel is split along the axis. Top and bottom.

EGW or Wilson Combat. You can send it to a smith to do the install, but you should be able to do it yourself with minimal effort.

Unless you are running a match, race or custom gun, a good manufacturer drop in will fit just fine. Just because it's a 1911 doesn't mean you have to have Ed Brown himself do the installation.

That sucks.

I think a Squib load is usually primer, no powder. I did it once, Luckily for me the G20 would not feed the next round. After that I added a powder checker to my progressive reloader.

I run 5.5 grains of 231 with 230 grain 45s. It seems to work well. Part of my range kit is an old screwdriver and hammer. Occasionally a cartridge has 0.0 grains.

I've always seen squib as anything that entered but didn't exit the barrel, be it to little or no powder. Any drop in barrel should work, might require minor fitting. Unless you are 100% confident no damage was done to the rest of the gun, I'd say have a smith look at it and do any fitting, just to be sure.

Damn, sorry to hear that..I had a squib in a Mosin 91/30 and was lucky that I noticed the low recoil and no dust down range.

Bullet was about 12 inches from the muzzle. I was able to spray lube in there and then tap it out with a brass cleaning rod for no damage.
