I have a Cannon safe and I've been wondering something. If for some reason we ever get hit with an EMP either from the SUN , a nuke, etc. Will it fry my safe's Key pad? I'm guessing it would and of course my guns would be locked inside? Thanks for any info..

Yes. Dial locks FTW.

I think they sell EMP shields.

And what exactly are the odds an EMP will hit anytime soon?

After reading half of the book 1 second after. I don't want to be 1 second late to the party.

Keep you sawzall and drill in a faraday cage. Gun safes like that are mostly to keep people honest. Easily gotten into with tools and a little time.

If emp hits, it ain't like you got nothing else to do.

I had that same thought after reading "One second after" but the safe we bought is electronic entry. It's a sentry safe, nothing fancy but it is so much faster to open than the manual ones.

What sold me on it is that the keypad cover can pop off and you can open it with a big skeleton key they provide. That covers you in an EMP scenario ( as long as you dont lose the key). It takes literally no more than 3 seconds to open with the keypad.

The video posted on the other thread is big on the electronic licks. The easier your safe is to open, the more likely you are to put stuffy in it. That said the browning I have on order has a dial lock.

Agree with speed of entry.
I'd rather have fast access to my guns and ammo than be EMP proof.
The manual dials (the good ones) are ridiculously slow.
If you do a little research, the effects of EMP are way overblown.
A gun safe key pad probably wouldn't be affected.

EMP hits, most guys have enough around the house to break into that safe. So I'm not too worried about it..

I can always break out the torch and cut it open. Then kill zombies.

they also showed off a safe that had a keypad for quick entry, and a dial for emp/general failure.

And what electricity pray tell would you power those fine tools with?

My lithium ions stay on the charger. Without power, theyll keep a charge for a year or more. Plenty of time to drill through a gun safe!

Did you see the one on the video I posted that had both? It cost a little bit more, but you had electronic and a dial as backup.

If you have an electronic opening safe, what happens if the batteries die? can you change them from the front of the safe?

Yes

On my safe I can take the keypad off and open it with a key if for some reason the keypad quits working.

My main safe is a dial and I traded my two electronic pistol safes for the mechanical variety a year is so ago. I wasn't thinking about EMP's. I was just thinking I don't want to discover dead batteries in a moment when I'm in dire need of a firearm.

I too can unlock my safe manually if the keypad goes out

I just upgraded from a smaller safe, and had the same dillema. Went with a dial. No, it is not as fast as electric, but I get faster every time I open it. Down to several seconds now.

If you go with a dial, know that S&G is the way to go. Get one with brass internals, not aluminum. While Browning is one of the nicer safes readily available on a local level, they use an S&G lock (even on the Meddallion line) that has aluminum internals.

For speed, you can work your dial until you have the last two rotation directions to go. Never leave one, as the lock will "tell" on the last rotation.

I still work it from the beginning though, for practice.
