I got to thinking.... what would be wrong with eating pigeon? Especially the ones outside of grain elevators or barns, since they would probably have the same diet as say a dove or quail. Has anybody eaten pigeon before and was it any good?

The pidgeon IS an invasive species of dove.

Nothing wrong with some squab. You typically pay good money at high end restaurants for it.

Pigeon is a Rock Dove. Same thing as a regular one, just bigger.

Very good. We used to hunt them in the parking garages in Houston

Racing pigeons are especially tasty!

In all seriousness, nothing wrong with eating pigeon. In fact, I like them a little bit better than dove. More meat...same taste.

I had pigeon at some swanky place over in Italy. Tasted like a big dove. It was pretty darn good.

I eat them anytime I can kill them.

If you were a freshman in Hart Hall around 1995-96 and you ate "dove" at the dorm barbecue then you definitely ate pigeons. ...and not hearty country pigeons, but nasty city pigeons that live eat stale french fries, spit and cigarette butts off the sidewalk.

Don't be pulling my chain fellas. I will eat me some pidgeon if it taste like dove

griz- no chain yanking. Pigeon is good eats.

That being said, I don't think I'd want to knowingly eat pigeon that came from an urban area. And I'm somebody who's about as adventurous when it comes to food as ursus.

If you ever see squab on a menu in a fancy restaurant, you're seeing pigeon.

It's good eats as others have said.

But as others have also said: citified pigeons are rats with wings. I would either shoot me some country pigeons or buy squab raised on a farm.

One of my favorite Moroccan dishes is called pastilla (spelled a multitude of ways) and the traditional meat is pigeon. Tastes dang good.

also, as others have mentioned- "squab" is pigeon with a gussied up name.

I think technically squab is defined as a young pigeon who hasn't flown/left the nest yet.

I could be wrong though.

On opening day, I shot and ate plenty of pigeon (country ones that lived around grain silos eating maize, corn, and crickets...not stale french fries, spit, and cigarette butts). Just takes an extra strip of bacon when wrapping them.

Pigeon is very good just don't dry it out! I have had my fair share of squab last couple of years.

Yea there's tons of pigeon at my place, and if they taste as good as y'all say then I'm gonna screw trying to hunt dove, I'm just gonna shoot 30 pigeons a day.

I'm not pulling your leg. They taste exactly like dove. Just huge. City/country pigeon does not matter. Usually I shoot at least one a season that is flying with a group of dove.

Got permission to trap them at the UofA Dairy during my time there to work my dog with. I agree with the others. they taste a lot like any dove. Not a huge fan so unfortunately I let most go to waste.

Killed a couple pigeons this year while dove hunting. They taste just like dove, they're just bigger so it's actually more productive to take pigeon over dove if you like to eat bird. Next year I will shoot every freakin' pigeon I see.

Less work + more meat + no limit = win.

Many countries (such as those in the Middle East) eat pigeons just love we eat duck. Not eaten in the U.S. because they're generally considered disgusting animals (similar to pigs in the Middle East). I don't see anything wrong with eating one in the wild, though I'd be hesitant/concerned if it were close to a major metro area wondering what that f-er has been eating most of his life......

Please describe the pigeon hunts occurring in Houston parking garages. Just trying to understand the mechanics of that, though I figure out doesn't involve a shotgun.

Pellet gun + back porch (or parking garage on lunch break (make sure ASPCA doesn't see)) = DINNER

On a hunt in Eldorado this past year, I got my limit of white wings and mourning doves early in the afternoon. I then trekked back up to the trucks by the grain silos flanking the field, pulled out a lawn chair, cracked a beer and started teeing off on pigeons. So much fun, same taste, more meat. Didn't even have to get up out of the lawn chair.

I like the comments about not eating a "city" pigeon.

Especially considering that I've seen more dove on the outfall of the local wastewater treatment plants than anywhere else in the wild. Yeah, those are the same birds that hunters will gladly take as game and chow down on.
