I've been reading up on them for a couple of months. My fiancee wants to get a female dog to run with and I thought this would be my opportunity to get my "Old Yeller dog."

Does anyone have any first-hand experience with these dogs that they would care to share? Things to know, training tips, etc. Anything experience you care to share would be awesome.

Thanks!
and Merry Christmas!

Not helping with breeder but my grandfathe in-law had one on his property in Arkansas and while he had some aggression he was an awesome dog. Not great for small yard, small kids, other pets though.

Awesome dogs. They are bred to work though. They must have room to exercise regularly, and are a handful as pups. If you do any kind of hunting, you can parlay some great uses for your wife's pet to help you on the trail. Good luck!

I'm in Michigan right now without hunting land, but the idea is that I'll be able to hunt her once I get back to texas in the next few years... In the meantime I'll just have to work her up here.

And she's wanted a Yellow Lab her whole life. I've convinced her that this dog will be better because of the shorter coat. (I have a male dog now that sheds like a woolly mammoth.

Would you say they are somewhat similar to a lab?

@ redline. They are very similar to a lab as a pup. Very hyper. They tend to calm down around 18 months or so. As a hunting dog, they do crossover well from tracking blood or working live animals. They can learn to retieve well also. They are very smart and very protective o their territory also. I love labs too. They have great crossover value, and are great dogs too. I like the curs and lacy's for working from a maintenance standpoint though. Again, it's best to have atleast a few acres or somewhere you can visit regularly for exercise and work. They are very energetic and have a great drive to work. There is always breeders that breed for show also. These dogs will be a little more laid back, more so than dogs bred strictly for work or hunting. You will love it if you can make it through the puppy stage, and your wife will be very safe on her runs

The wife and I had one (got cancer at age 5 earlier this year, had to have her put down).

Great dogs, great personalities. They are hyper for the first 1-1.5 years. Ours actually chewed up some of the metal on the back door one day.

Very smart, very affectionate, and for the short time we had her around our infant son, very well behaved.

When/if we get another dog, if the pain isn't too much, I would love to get another dog of the same breed.

Congrats! Good luck! You may end up down south for a good breeder. Not sure how popular they are up north. Louisiana and Texas have kennels that can actually ship to you though. Enjoy!

I agree with Clark. As you can tell from my user name, I have a great affinity for Black Mouth Curs. You're pup will need a lot of exercise and attention, but it will become a great companion. I would describe them more as loyal and protective, instead of aggressive. In my experience the females are more territorial than males, for what that's worth. You won't have to worry about anything bothering the bride on her runs as long as the dog is still alive. I hunted hogs with them for years and still keep at least one around as a family dog. The one thing I would advise is don't get 2 pups at once thinking that they would keep each other company. Get one pup only and spend some time with it, it will be you're best friend.

I found my breeder I believe. Ladner Black Mouth Curs out of Mississippi. I've heard good things. Anyone here have any experience with the breeder and their dogs?

My wife & I's first dog after we got married. Awesome dog & was great with our kids, even while they were young. Never had an issue at all but she was very protective if she thought one of the kids was threatened. She also wanted to go after any other dog her size, which did create some problems. My dad had her brother & the brother was even better, in my opinion.

I have one and he might be the best dog I've ever had- definitely the toughest. Back when he could run free on our old place, he would kill any varmint he could catch.

I read somewhere that you aren't supposed to yell at or do anything physical when trying to get a cur to do something- just use stern commands. That (at least for my dog) is complete crap.

He's a little older now, and he's great with our 2 year old. Of course, I don't let her in with the dogs unless I'm there, but he will eat single kernels of food out of her hand.

Great dogs but they get bored easily... need lots of things to Chase, chew and occupy their days with.

I had a female that was easy to train to blood trail and retrieve doves, even in water... she had webbed feet and would stay in the water til you stopped throwing things, even to the point of exhaustion and near drowning.

The biggest prob I had with her was focus. Initially, it was very difficult to train her on basic commands and obedience... prob mostly my fault. She would also wander quite easily if given the chance... usually picking up some cold and or hot trail and just going balls out on it. Shock collar was the only thing that worked. She would chase cows, deer and anything else that would flee.

Prone to be very hard headed and a pain in the ass, but Loyal to a fault. Beautiful, athletic dogs... best I've ever had. Miss that dog.

Great dogs, but they need they need lots of room! They have a crazy hunting drive (they'll tree anything that can climb) and stamina that is off the charts, and they never back down from a fight. Try your best to get them around other dogs at a young age, as they WILL be aggressive towards other dogs If they don't get much socialization when they are young. (my parents old BMC would go toe - to - toe with just about any dog it laid eyes on).
They do become very laid back as they age and even start warming up to house cats after about age 10. First and foremost they need space. I made the mistake of bringing my BMC back to college station with me, and it was torture having to watch her stare at the open pasture across the street through the cracks off our fence. I would highly recommend a BMC to anybody that is looking for a good, old fashioned ranch dog, as long as they have ample space.
