What does it take (stamps, permits etc) to hunt Sandhill Crane? Have heard they are tough to bring down but great to eat.

you have to get a free crane permit from TP&W. YOu can get it at their office or call them and they will mail it to you.

looks like Ribeye - tastes like duck. fun to hunt and - yes - With steel shot it will take several shot to do the job.

Treat em like steak and they taste like steak.

You can hunt cranes with lead shot FYI.

I don't think you can use lead for cranes. Even if you can in some situations, you can't over water. And you can't hunt geese simultaneously either then.

Use steel and shoot em in the wings. Just break their neck when you get to them.

"Sandhill Cranes MAY be taken with lead shot. However, Wildlife Management Areas and Federal Wildlife Refuges have special regulations requiring nontoxic shot for ALL game bird hunting, including Sandhill Cranes."

You can hunt cranes and rails with lead over water. You cannot hunt waterfowl (ducks and geese) with lead, there is no restriction on song lead over water. There should be, but there isn't.

3 1/2 inch #2 hevishot works pretty good for me. Just remember that the ammo is the cheapest part of a hunting trip. Plus with a limit of 2, you shouldn't need more that 4-5 Shells.

If you managed to make it taste like duck, you suck at cooking. I am no chef, but damn, it was pretty good meat. You're right though, they are fun to hunt (can be really tough to get if you are hunting by yourself, depending on several factors).

I use size T steel shot and if you place your shot correctly, they will fall. And yeah, sometimes it takes an extra mercy shot to help them die once they are on the ground and ready to fight.

my lab retrieved dozens of them. I was always careful to make sure they were dead before I sent him.

Once one I thought was dead stood up, and was ready to fight my lab. When the crane stood up my lab knew enough to hit the brakes and stay back. He just barked at the crane until i came out there and finished it off.

My deerlease gets INFESTED with them about the first of December every year (hunted there two years now). Corn robbing SOB's.

I have been tempted to get a tag and take one, but wife is already complaining about plucking them. Do you have to boil them slightly to get this done efficiently?
OnlyForNow
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Plucking? Dude you don't have to pluck it. Split the breast and fillet out the breast meat pieces.
aggie_2001_2005
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, you do not pluck a sandhill. You breast it out and enjoy.

Leg meat is not salvageable due to ridiculous amount of tendons, which is sad because they have some pretty good size thighs on them.
OnlyForNow

Your not gonna cook or freeze it with the breast bone/sternum in either so it's just easier, don't even have to gut.

Since the limit on sand hill cranes is 2 birds, I usually spring for an extra whooping crane permit. Gives you something extra to shoot since you are already out there and set up.

Is it legal to shoot a Sandhill Crane with a rifle?

It is illegal to shoot a sandhill crane with a rifle.

Being that you can use lead, are sandhills exempt from or subject to the other normal migratory laws?

I just read the post above about the being corn robbers. Are you in trouble if you shoot them near a feeder?

Best way to hunt sandhills, from a crazy fishing guide that does it this way:

Take a standard trot line and secure it to a fence post, or drive a t-post and secure it to that.

Bait each hook with a piece of canned corn.

Return next day to find several sandhills hooked.

Rodeo ensues as you try to dispatch them.

You don't need a Federal duck stamp (but you do need the Federal Sandhill Crane Hunting Permit), but baiting regulations do apply to cranes too.
aggie_2001_2005
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, that trot line idea is only slightly illegal.

There was a group outside of Corpus that got busted big time for that several years ago.

I have seen picked corn circles COVERED with cranes. The whole 130 acres looked gray, and there was a racket that we literally heard a mile away.

A member or 3 of the group may or may not have taken a pot shot with a 270.

(i do not own a 270)

Always had fun shooting cranes. Damn things are 3' tall rats with wings. I can't think of anything that tastes worse. Feed them to your dog.

I literally think you people who can't make a crane taste good, good most likely ef up Mac n cheese.
