When you guys walk up to a dove that you've shot at it isn't dead, how do you guys proceed in finishing it off?

Is there a consensus, "most humane" way of doing it?

Wrap your pointing finger under ther beak and put your thumb at th base of thier skull. Pull down with your finger and push up with thumb. The job is done when you feel the spinal cord seperate from the skull.

I like it cause it makes for a better picture and your bird bag is less bloody

I usually give it a kick if it's still hopping around. Then quickly pull the skull from the body.

My 3 year old beat them w a stick.

Yeah I don't really like just ripping the head off. Bothers me a little too. In the past few years I've started just holding the head and throwing the bird, which still accomplishes the same thing but to me a lot quicker

My dad and I tank shoot. The tank is full of catfish.

As soon as the dove land in the tank, they are usually pulled under by a catfish. By the time they wash ashore, they've been thoroughly drowned.

We've only lost one permanently. I guess catfish don't like everything afterall. Must be the feathers and beaks/feet.

If it's a runner, I'll switch chokes real quick and take another shot at it. If it's just flapping around, we'll play dove pinwheel with it which either breaks the neck or pops the head off. I'm not a huge fan of just popping the head off because I've had several birds seem to spray all of their blood directly onto whatever shirt I am wearing that day.

This. It's super easy, quick for the bird and not at all messy. The same works for ducks, pheasants, turkeys and geese, just up the pressure.

Ya that's what I do, head between my pointer and middle fingers, flick at the ground. Body hits the ground, head stays in fingers. Quick.

I do that with geese. Their head seems to stay attached a little better than dove. And there's a lot more weight to whip around there.

I can only imagine the looks of horror if I brought a snow to an Aggie game and started twirling it above my head.

I used to do this. Last year I apparently just stunned a bird and he came to in my vest and flew away. I shot him again, and since then I've been pulling heads off.

Ha, the exact same thing happened to me tonight. I tried that technique out for the first time this evening (as opposed to popping off the head), and it seemed to work well. Got home and opened up the back of my SUV and there was a somewhat lively whitewing running around. Luckily his wings were broke and I was able to finish the deed.

Of course, the dove probably wouldn't have found a way out of my game vest if the squirrel hadn't chewed a hole in the corner of my vest several years earlier... I seem to have a problem with scaring game to 'death.'
