Is there anybody in the Dallas area that has some MSMA they'd be willing to sell me? Or someone from anywhere else who will be at the Florida game? I've got this dallis grass problem and I have no faith in 2-4-D. Trying to be realistic and realize that it's just too much to pull it up. Or if anyone knows where I can get some that would be good too.

Faith in 2,4-D as a grass killer is misplaced.

If you play golf you should look up your local superintendent. Not sure of square footage but it might also be worth looking for a single application from a professional. Price might seem high but you also might avoid having a bunch of expensive product left over.

You can buy MSMA without having a pesticide license, so any co-op or ag chem office around you should sell it to you. I believe our price is around $55 for a 2.5 gallon container, but you only use 2oz max in a 2 gal hand sprayer so the container goes a long way.

Thanks, oldcobra. Do you (or anyone else) know of any such places in the Dallas area? I was just under the impression that it wasn't really sold anymore and all of it had been bought up.

No it's still sold. It just illegal to use it in certain ways.

My in laws live in Celina and they've bought bulk fertilizer somewhere up there. I'll check with them on where they go, they're bound to have chemical.

I thought it was against the law to produce anymore and you could only still buy/sell/use existing quantities until Dec 2013. I certainly haven't been able to find any at my local nursery or Home Depot.

Just talked with our Agronomist, and he said it is still produced, it's not regulated, but its a grey area as far as use.

MSMA, as I've said before, has arsenic, thats what the A is. It works well situationally but do you want to put that on your lawn with kids and pets? It is not "allowed" for pasture use. The main reason it is still available is for commercial turf grass purposes such as golf courses. But, I know for a fact we do have it on hand, but it is a 2.5gal jug. Most lawn and garden stores probably wont have it in lower quantities or at all, like Lowes or Home Depot. The regulations surrounding MSMA as far as I understand, are it is specifically for Commercial use, but enforcement is difficult as it is not a restricted use in the sense it does not require a license to purchase. Like I said its all a "grey area" with regards to how you use it.

MSMA has been off the market for us regular folks, and few places have any old stock to sell. Licensed applicators can still procure it.

You don't need a license. It all depends on where you go, and if you're willing to buy in 2.5gal vs. small container.

A license was not needed prior to the "ban", and still isn't if you find some old stock...new availability is limited to licensed lawncare/golf course types. Just try and find some at a regular/retail seller of herbicides. And it won't get any better, according to this:

I don't see anywhere on there where it states you need a license. But I can assure you, you do NOT need a license to purchase it. This I am 100% positive of, and if new legislation has change it, retailers and wholesalers have not been notified to change practices yet, or given a time as to when they have to change.

I have 50 gallons that I've been stock piling for two years.. Won't be selling any of it

I would try spot spraying or using a wick with Round -up... Good luck...

If it wasn't clarified already 2-4-D is for broad leafs only.. Dallas grass will laugh at it..

Sounds like a case of too many chiefs, not enough Indians. There's no way to limit the sell to just turf farms, right of ways, etc as of right now. The label states it's for use only in those places, but I doubt black helicopters will show up if you spray your yard.

I'm going to post some pictures tonight or tomorrow of the yard. I might just round up everything in a few spots and put down some sod where it's too out of control.

Look into getting a non ionic surfactant to throw in the tank to spray too. You will see results same day. 1/2oz per gal. Not sure if this is available for you, but like some have said, check with a local super, maybe they have a surplus, strike a conversation.

Where are you located?

Any ideas for a co-op type place near Kingwood where I might find MSMA?

Skier, I am east of Dallas.

I really appreciate all the help, but before I go through all of the trouble of finding MSMA and then using it to treat my yard, I need to make sure that it is worthwhile. Someone on the golf forum suggested that there are maybe some spots in my yard that just need to be killed with Round Up and re sod. One guy said that he battled with dallisgrass infestation for years.

I don't mind doing the work if I have a reasonable chance of getting this under control, but if it's a lost cause or I'm in for a 3+ year battle, I would strongly consider laying sod. I'm thinking that at least my side yard would need to be re-sod.

Here are some pictures of the yard.

This is what I would call my Level 1 situation. Probably half of my front yard has dallisgrass like this. Lots of dallisgrass but probably 3/4 bermuda.

This is my Level 2 situation. I'd say the majority of my back yard is in this kind of shape. Bermuda is starting to be 50% or less of the groundcover. Also some spots like this in my front yard.

Level 3. Pretty much all of my side yard, chunks of my back yard, one small area of my front yard. Basically ZERO bermuda and the dallis grass is right around 100% of the ground cover.

And if I do re-sod it, can I do that in the fall? Also, any specific recommendations? The yard has some serious slope to it and of course I just have a regular mower. I don't know anything about the different types. Anyone feel strongly about tiff 419 vs. common vs. celebration, etc?

If you are doing the entire yard, convert it to Zoysia.
