OB,

I'm looking to pick up a bit for the backyard here in the near future. Does anyone have any suggestions for manufactures in the Houston area?

Really just looking for a cast iron grill that I can cook steaks, fajitas, fish etc... over burned own coals and not pull out a loan to pay for it.

Help me OB you're my only hope!

not sure about cast iron, however i shopped Klose, Pitts by JJ and Gator Pits and settled on a Gator Pit.

There are others in the area as well. Pitts and Spitts, Tejas, etc.

Cast iron was probably the wrong description, I guess I'm looking for not stainless.

Thanks for the idea Ducks, I'm going to check them out.

I'd recommend a Lyfe Tyme (I have one). Contact them for prices and local dealers.

I'll second LyfeTyme. Just pulled a rack of ribs off of mine earlier. I looked at every one of the Houston manufacturers mentioned earlier. I felt that their pits, while very nice pits, had a lot of style and shine over pure function. I got a lot more pit for my money with the LyfeTyme.

I actually ordered from the factory in Uvalde, borrowed a trailer, and picked it up myself. The price was the same as going through a dealer, but it wasn't one the dealer usually stocked so my lead time would have been much longer since they placed orders by the semi-load.

First fire I built in it. I rubbed the whole inside with Vegetable oil, and burned a nice hot fire to get rid of any oil from the pipe supplier and paint fumes.

I have a Klose and my buddy has a Gator Pit. Both excellent choices.

I cooked in a Tejas Smoker during my time in Houston. Worth a look. Solid pit with all the nice features.

I've got a gator pit. Good pits. I like the heat baffles they put in.

There is a place off of 610 North inbetween Shepherd and Yale. I'll drive by on my way home. A google search isn't pulling up a website.

Gator, Pitmaker or Klose. I'd visit each shop and then make your decision. I decided to go with Pitmaker because they make the coolest, most unique pits on the market. My sniper from Pitmaker is nomex gasket lined, has zero leaks and holds temps like a champ. I've since added a Gator charcoal grill to my trailer and couldn't be happier. Rich at Gator knows what he's doing too and makes a great product.

My main goal in life is to find a beer as cold as a woman's heart
