.338! nah, I don't think so. .308 will be good enough for me. I already have the smaller caliber 5.45x39. I'll probably get both the AK47 and the AR10, because, we all know, the person who dies with the most guns wins, right?
Being someone who owns an several variants of both, I can say that you shouldn't listen to common misconceptions.
AR's can be EVERY bit as reliable as AK's
AK's can be Very accurate (saiga 5.45 for example)
It Really depends on what AR or what AK type you get and who it is made by.
Not all AR's are created equal and not all AK's are created equal.
If you're limiting your budget to less than $700, you'd be better off to get a Saiga 7.62x39 or 5.45x39 and convert it. It will be as accurate and more reliable than a cheap AR.
If you have a budget of over $700, get an AR because you can get an AR that is every bit as reliable as an AK and more accurate.
By the way, if you shoot steel case .223, it is on par if not slightly cheaper than 7.62x39. If you have a quality AR-15, it will easily handle steel cased ammo.
While we are (sort of) on the topic. I consider my DD M4V7 a mid-high end AR, and it's hit or miss with steel case. Some days, I can send 250-300 steel case through it, some days only a few mags. I've been doing some reading about it, and one suggestion was to load 9 steel case, 1 brass case, 9,1,9,1. You get the point. It'll probably be a few weeks until I shoot again, does anyone want to try this out? If not, I'll gladly write up the results.
Steel cased is general loaded to lighter pressures, so if you have a H2 buffer, this can cause it to not cycle properly. Otherwise, I have found russian ammo to be More reliable, though less accurate, than american made ammo
If you stick to non-magnified red-dot optics the rifles are very similar for most shooters. AR irons are better than AK, and the AK trigger on average is a little worse than a stock AR trigger.
The poor AK trigger and very short sight radius on the AK make it hard to shoot well. And most (almost all) shooters are such poor shots with even good irons and good sights that the AK really suffers a bad rap for accuracy.
Need a rifle that will ask for no lube and no upkeep that will solve any problem within 300 meters with a smile (assuming you are up to it?)...AK.
