Sorry for the ridiculously large pic.....

What do you call this kind of fence if I wanted to have one built?

Thanks!

That looks like a really fancy hog panel fence to me.

I was going to say cattle panels as well....

Yeah, "hog wire" is what I would call it too......just didn't know if "fancy hog wire" fence had a 'trade name'?

hog or cattle wire.

A 4 inch high by 2 inch wide is a horse fence.

It's welded wire fence. Just looks like a high quality welded wire, not the stuff you would get at Home Depot.

Roger all of the above. My end game here would really be to build one myself.......just trying to figure out how the welded wire is attached to the wooden components so that it appears as it does in the pic.

Thanks guys.

Should say, it's a welded wire panel. Welded wire is the trade name. Similar to these:

Looks like it is slotted into the wood like glass in a window.

Aggman, it's being held in place by the wood supports around it. See the 2x4 or whatever it is on the top? There would be a channel cut in the middle that the fence would slide into. On the bottom, they have taken 2 cedar boards and sandwiched the panel in between. Then they have taken 2 1 x whatever for the left and right sides and sandwiched the fence in between those.

Basically, you're just nailing a bunch of boards together to support it.

looks like its boxed in with 1 inch x 1 inch. Don't see any staple nails. So Framing would be my guess. Those are great for supporting vines. Had a couple of confederate jasmine growing on a fence similar to that. Gave off the best fragrance when it was flowering. Grew quite fast. Might have to do something similar again.

Those are called cattle panels, or hog panels, depending on the height and wire spacing (cattle panels usually being larger with wider spacing). They are typically 6 gauge wire.

If you ask for welded wire, you are going to get a thin gauge wire mesh that is much cheaper and flimsier and will fall apart and rust in no time.

Having built something similar myself at the in-laws they likely have used the hog panels and have it tacked into one side of the frame or the other using u-tacks.

But those tacks are hidden by 1x2 cedar slats on either side. Really nicely done in that photo. I can't tell how they've secured the frame to the support posts though. Perhaps they screwed it in (FIFY protected) from underneath.

Obligatory Dallas blow. These things are found all over Austin. It's just like ornate wrought iron. There's a market for everything

If you live in a community with an HOA, it's likely illegal. It's considered chain-link or wire.

You could always do Cayote fence.

As some of you have said, I'd call that style of metal fencing a horse panel.

If I were building it, I think the easiest way would be to use 2x4 framing with slots cut into it with a dado blade or a double pass with a table saw. A router could be used, but I think it would be a little more trouble.

I believe what I've heard around Austin is that it's "bull pannel fencing".
