I've come across a few extra bucks and a friend of mine swears by these reels. I'm not sure they're worth the money.

hehe....lol. Yeah, I could see how a 200 dollar reel might be 'better' than a 50 dollar one, but anything over that is a complete and total pissing away of money in my opinion. You can probably gather by what I think of the ones linked. Something about fools and their monies....

yea, i'm sure the reel is sweet...but i doubt it's sweeter than a $200 reel and 40 lap dances.

A guide let me use his to catch a few trout but the whole time I was scared the damn thing would fall in the water.

Its says something about being able to be 'owner maintained'. Yet that requires the purchase of a 'tool kit', and the video of the maintenance doesnt look like something many will tackle. Im guessing if you are going to drop that much on a reel, then you'll just have it maintained at the dealer.

I say that because my tool kit for my reels involves a small crescent, a flat head and a Phillips screw driver. This allows me to have my reel nearly completely stripped down in less time than it took to get through the title segment of the maintenance video.

I dont want to hate on it, but GD..its a bit overkill.

Van Staal yes. They have been around for years. Great craftmanship. Check out the price on a pair of their pliers.

Port A Outfitters had a Zeebaas a couple of years ago that I played with. Lots of wow factor.

The creator of Van Staal is now/was the Zeebaas guy. For awhile they were 100% made in the USA.....not now. I think the VS is about $100 less. The big advantage or attraction they have is the drag system. They are rated up around #40 which is going to make for a great surf reel and you have to be really special to handle a drag set that high.

If you look at a Shimano Stella 1000 it will only hold about 90 yards of #10 Power Pro with a max drag of #7 and it is about $700 whereas the VS & ZB are going to hold 500 yards of #50 with a max drag of #40.

Take a stab at the VS parent company...

does Van Staal make a Snoopy line?

No, the Snoopy line was dropped before the Van Staal's.

If interested you can special order a Van Staal Dora the Explorer model as well as a SpongeBob SquarePants version.

Anybody know where the Zebco name comes from without googling it?
