Put 2 fillets in a ziplock bag that were in water. Put the bag in my cooler and it must have leaked a little bit. I have washed it, drained it, and dried it. I put it up in my garage for a while and pulled it out today to use again and I can still smell it. I loaded it down with drinks and ice. Hoping the cold temps and water will cut down on the smell. Any tips on how to get the smell out? I was thinking maybe baking soda paste with some lemons or something. Maybe a degreaser of sorts.

Yup, baking soda. Put a fridge and freezer box, leave the lid barely open and let it sit. Or you can scrub it down with baking soda and rinse.

When you store it after uses, throw a few pieces of crumpled newspaper. It'll absorb moisture and help with odors.

Baking soda and vinegar.

I'd dump a couple big boxes in it, then add a half gallon or so of vinegar and let it go to town. Maybe add some dish detergent if you really want to scrub on it.

Add a few cups of bleach, fill it up with water, and let it sit for 2-3 days

I had a cooler hang onto a crawfish water funk a while back. Chlorox Cleanup, washed the crap out of it, and left it open outside on the patio to air out for a while.

I thought thats how they were supposed to smell.

Leave it upside down airing out in the yard until the HOA sends a nasty note.

Designate that cooler as your fish cooler, and then buy a new one for other stuff?

I usually pour a pint or so of Clorox in the cooler and fill it to the rim with water. Close it up and let it sit for a few days on the porch. Keeping the lid closed helps keep the active ingredient in the Clorox from evaporating out of the water. It always works for me.

Thought about that, but it is a "work" cooler that I have had for about a month and it is too nice for it to just be a fish cooler. It is one of the big 150 qt 7 day maxcold coolers.

Of course we do have new logoed Yeti coolers available at a discount to us. Would be awesome to have until it gets stolen.

Seven, I stuck my head in it and took a big whiff a few days after it aired out and didn't smell anything. I didn't scrub the outside as much and it may have still had just the lightest wisp of swamp funk.

I thought that the fish cooler and the drink cooler were the same thing. Also makes a great bench seat at the front of the boat. I'll post a pic later if I can find it.
