is the mum the stamp on the reciever or the butt of the bolt??

part of the stock looks like it's missing...i guess I could replace it for $50.

The mum is on the receiver in your second pic, right above the Japanese writing. Most of them were ground off by the Japanese at the end of WWII to spare the emperor the embarrassment of surrender.

Most of the ones that have the mums intact were captured rifles before the Japanese were able to grind them off.

I need to get a better look at this thing with a bore light. The bolt and what I can see of the rifling looks unfired.

Jap rifles were actually chrome lined. Kind of a rarity in that period.

Compare your serial number and the symbols around it to what you find here to determine it's manufacture date and location. Yours looks like an early to mid-range Type 99 short rifle, from some of the features I can see in the pics. Handguard is missing, but it has the AA rear sight, knurled safety knob, two or three screw front band, early bolt release, plum bolt knob, and wide buttplate. The stock is in excellent shape as well, assuming it has not been refinished. Fill in some more of the details the data sheet goes through, and you'll know exactly what you have.

thanks Log-

I have a Type 99 made by Nagoya between '39 and '45.

I also have a burlap bag for the gun...I'll try to get pictures of that later this week-

Towns03, if you ever decide to sell that Arisaka, please let me know. I would love to be able to "replace" the one of my grandfather's that was stolen.
