Questions for vet :

1.)Is trifexis less or more toxic than advantix for flea control ?

2.)Do natural non-toxic products work for flea control ? I am considering switching to a natural non-toxic product called Evolv, it contains cedar and lemon grass oil

I've used both. My vet/buddy now has my lab on trifexus. He doesn't like the taste but it's been working great and I like having a one pill does all.

Take your dog to a cedar forest and sit in the lemon grass and see if s/ he gets any fleas.

Advantix is Advantage (fleas) + permethrin. IMO, if fleas are the problem use plain Advantage.

trifexis is comfortis (fleas) + heart worm preventive.
There is Advantage Multi which is Advantage + heart worm preventive.

All work well. Advantix is my least favorite of the group.

Had bad fleas on my lab last year and advantage nor frontline did squat. In CS frontline worked fine, so I got Comfortis; and man that worked like a charm.

Expensive, but very flea free. I like the drug activity in Comfortis and triflexis over advantage mutli/advantix... not to mention, advantix is really bad (like seizures and death) for cats if they are friendly with your dogs.

All of the topicals (advantage, frontline, etc.,) work by coating the dogs skin and hair. When the flea gets on the dog they get the product on them and eventually die. It may take 30 minutes to 4 hours before they die, allowing them time to bite several times before doing so. Trifexis is secreted through the skin and will kill the flea when it takes it's first bite.

There are no flea products that will prevent fleas from getting on the dog. They all require the flea to get on the dog before they can kill the flea. I like and recomend comfortis/trifexis because it kills the flea faster.

Trifexis/Comfortis may cause vomiting in a very small number of dogs. It is labelled to be given with food. In most cases, if dogs vomit after taking comfortis/trifexis the first time, they develop a tollerance to it after a dose or two. If they vomit in the first hour after taking, you need to repeat the dose. After one hour, absorption is complete and you do not need to re-dose. If you do have to redose, call your vet and Elanco will replace the dose for free.

i just switched from advantage to comfortis. i think have created a population of super fleas that are impervious to atvantage. comfortis seems to be working better but we are only one dose in.

My Labs take comfortis. The blonde one thinks its a treat, the chocolate will only eat it if I wrap it in a couple pill pockets or jam it down her throat. We usually give it to them after they eat, the rib and I have found that if we give it to them on an empty stomach, the pill will show up about 10 minutes later on the living room floor.

On a side note, for about the first few months of giving it to them, they'd get real wound up and hyper, and rub up against the couches or anything they could find.

Comfortis and Trifexis both require a meal at dosing to be effective. Giving it on an empty stomach results in increased GI upset and lack of efficacy.
