Not a may fly. Usually called mosquito hawks, although these guys don't even eat in this adult stage of their short lives.

We call those mosquito hawks. It's odd though, I remember love bugs and June bugs growing up in B/CS but I can't remember these mosquito hawks at all. We have too many of them in Katy.

"_______" - Lubbock, TX

Never saw one before moving to College Station. First roommates called it a Mosquito Hawk; so do I. 'Tis a shame that they do not eat mosquitoes at the level they are well-respected for.

crane fly = mosquito hawk, Family Tipulidae

may flies are in a completely different order. the ones you see everywhere this time of year are crane flies.

It doesn't matter where I'm from cuz I'm an entomologist

They're really called Crane Fly but I always knew them as Mosquito Hawks (and they don't eat mosquitos, unfortunately).

No one in their right mind would ever confuse a Crane Fly/Mosquito Hawk with a May Fly.

No kidding. The ironic thing is that dragon flies DO eat a lot of mosquitos, and the "typical" recommendation to mosquito problems is "get Purple Martins or bats!" But THEY eat dragon flies!

Always called those mosquito hawks, though I didn't know until reading this thread that they didn't actually eat mosquitoes. I guess I can start swatting them now.

quote:
A crane fly is an insect in the family Tipulidae. Adults are very slender, long-legged flies that may vary in length from 2–60 millimetres (0.079–2.4 in) though tropical species may exceed to 100 millimetres or 3.9 inches.
In the United Kingdom, Ireland, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia they are commonly referred to as daddy longlegs, but this name can also refer to two unrelated arthropods: members of the arachnid order Opiliones (especially in the United States and Canada) and the cellar spider Pholcidae (especially in Australia)
