Where could my daughter safely and legally store a firearm if she lived in an on campus dorm?

Has anyone else encountered this?

Was thinking Safe deposit box, but I know my local bank does not want firearms in there. I was told "no firearms" by the banker while only asking what could be put in the box.

Son-in-law and several of his friends are avid hunters. While at USAFA, they rented an off-campus storage unit together.

Son was fencer (epee, not barbed wire) for a while at A&M. I think he could have jumped through some hoops and kept his "weapons" in the dorm, but being a fish, it was just a lot simpler to leave them in the trunk of his car.

Also, reading the University regulations

http://rules-saps.tamu.edu/PDFs/34.06.02.M1.pdf
quote:
The Texas Penal Code prohibits possession of firearms, illegal knives, clubs, or prohibited weapons (as defined in Penal Code Section 46.05(a)) on the physical premises of a school or educational institution. This prohibition even includes individuals licensed to carry a concealed handgun....

“Premises” as used in this Rule means a building or portion of a building. The term does not include any public or private driveway, street, sidewalk, walkway, parking lot, parking garage or other parking area.

Not a lawyer, nor do I play one on the Internet. But I read that to say that locked in your car is legal.

I kept mine in gun cases under my bed in my dorm back in the 80's (around hunting season - not year-round). I certainly was not alone, even on my floor. Of course, I was lucky enough to have my own room at that time.

I have a friend that stored all his guns in rented storage. They were all stolen.

I have little doubt that my dorm would have had much trouble defending itself either (late 80s, early 90s). Nobody had an arsenal or anything, but there were routinely deer rifles and shotguns leaned up in the corner of the closet behind the clothes. Nobody cared either.

I honestly would suggest leaving them at home. IF you were to rent a storage locker, I'd put a very heavy safe in there. Storage lockers are too easy to break in to.

"Back in the Day" UPD would store guns for students living in the dorms, but those days are long since gone.

We used to keep ours at the KK office in the basement of the YMCA bldg. They were accessible 24/7 no questions asked. We routinely went hunting on weekends and would return to the dorm, bring our guns to our room, clean em and then walk across campus and return them to the Y. It was no big deal to see guys walking from the Y to their cars on a Friday afternoon with several gun cases.
Guess that would cause a code whatever today .

Thanks for all the replies so far.

FYI - Just wanted her to have some protection when traveling alone to and from home. And to have it for range practice in her spare time.
I would not want the gun to be carried into the dorm at all especially these days.

Locked up in the car - if it is not a problem would be great.

Locked up (unloaded in a safe deposit box) - would be great, but not sure of legality or feasibility.
I noticed no one mentioned any comments on it.

Anything I am not thinking of?

Sounds like in the car is the best bet.

I had my guns in my dorm room. I'm old.

I'm assuming you would have already gone this route if it was an option: have a friend in CS with a safe store it for her.

I kept an 870 in Aston back in '01. It was much quieter than the ferrets my roommate kept the next year. Neither were ever found.

Vehicle would be the best bet.

Talking about walking across campus with a long gun; I've always wanted to organize a walk through. Long guns only. Unloaded. WCG to Zachary. Perfectly legal. Higher numbers would help.

Yes. She can keep a firearm in her car so long as it is not visible

Rebel,

The last time (maybe 1-2 years ago) a CT walked campus with one of the BLUE practice M-16 that the Trigon uses. They shut down campus. Staging a long gun walk although legal is probably a really bad idea.

I will just throw this out there as an option...

During my days of school I worked at a Pawn Shop on the weekends...she could pawn the gun for a low dollar amount and it would essentially be a low cost safe storage. An example, if she came in and pawned it for $20, it would cost her $23 to pick it up within 30 days, $26 bucks for 60 days, and $29 bucks for a 90 day loan...the longest you can have a loan out is 90 days without coming in and paying the interest off on it. College Station Pawn is Aggie Owned and operated (at least it was when I worked there). He is a good Ag, he would routinely buy "lost" Aggie rings and return them to the ring office to be returned to the owner on his own dime. (Unless he saw the same ring more than once, then he would just assume they were selling their ring and didn't deserve it.) Anyway, upon request, they will put a note in the system to call someone if the gun has been forgotten about and no interest paid on it before they pull the gun assuming no one is coming back for the gun. If she did the loan for $10, I think it would basically turn into a $2/ month storage. Another plus is that Champion Firearms with an indoor shooting range is literally less than a mile from the pawn shop and less than 3 miles from campus, so it would be convenient as well, and they are open 7 days a week so it shouldn't be a problem finding time to get the gun when she will need it.

Doc, yes, I was there. It was 100% ridiculous. I did notice that the code maroon that went out didn't phase anyone but the crazies and the bus drivers.

DeWrecking Crew - As I read your first sentence, I thought that was a horrible idea. But as I read on, I'm kind of thinking that's not too bad of an idea. (If it's a cheap gun and you can trust the owner, of course).

I kept my guns hidden in my truck, AND DIDN'T TELL ANYONE THEY WERE THERE.

IIRC you can not STORE a firearm in a vehicle. This may have changed recently but it was my understanding that carrying and transporting a firearm in a vehicle is legal but the extended storage of one is iffy.
I really hope someone chimes in with some proof otherwise.

Other forms of self-protection you might want to look into:
ASP batons
pepper spray (perhaps the Kimber PepperBlaster)

why would it be iffy?

Why not?
Captain Quagmire
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Rusty, the law doesn't differentiate between transporting and storing in that sense. It is simply possession in whatever sense that may be.

Rusty,

batons are illegal to carry on your person.

The new account rep was wrong technically. There are no federal laws against it and states can't make a law against it. The bank can prohibit it in the contract "signature card" you sign but the bank can not even ask you what is in there and damn sure can not check. So yeah if you want to do it you can. But a gun is kind of useless if you only have access to it at most 8-5 Monday to Friday.

Ole Rock...Pawn shops are not as evil as most people think...the one I worked at had hundreds of thousands of dollars in guns in pawn at any given time, we were insured and bonded, we carried the same FFL license as Champion Firearms did...

There is no reason to think the gun won't be safe, sound, and well taken care of. Where people get in trouble is they go and get a $500 dollar loan on a $2000 gun, and then can't afford to get it back...If the OP keeps the loan amounts small it should work out great

Geez, there must be some damn Frenchman running the school recently. In '05 I was a pisshead taking Econ with one of the butts. The prof had said that he needed guards at the door because so many people left during class. The sergebutt and I went to the Corps Center and brought a welded M-16 and M-1 to class and sat at the door. No one left that day. The prof loved it and gave us extra credit. Felt pretty awesome and we got some odd looks that day.

I have considered opening a firearms specific storage shop in B/CS. With over 40,000 students it might be a decent market for students living on campus and for going home for the holidays.

LoudestWHOOP!,

If you send something fun or exotic, my hubby would probably store it in our gun safe for the privilege of taking it to the gun range!

How old is your daughter and does she have a chl?

I wouldn't keep it in the car bc of how bad theft is and the fact that at some point she will probably have a drink or two and drive.

I assume you are talking pistol. It would be a big safety deposit box if you are talking long gun.
