Thinking about one of these fine weapons for a Christmas present to myself. Got a hog hunt coming soon and cant decide on which one to get. What is the better hog slayer?

Any OB guys want to sell?

Upgrade to the .450. I have that same gun in .450 Mag. Love it.

Garand.

You'll be able to get a guide gun just about any time you want in the future. Garands are getting in shorter supply every day.

And stick with the .45-70. Classic, historic, purely awesome artillery round.

Easy...Garand. You may get one that went ashore on Omaha beach.

That said I do love my 45-70 Marlin (non-guide gun.)

Garand

But if I made a list of ten "must have" rifles both are on my list. So definitely get the 45-70 later.

Considering alot of guys in S.Texas use a Barlow to kill'em, I guess either one would work!

Last time I researched the CMP you had to be a member or something. I want to buy from one of you guys face to face and avoid all the red tape that goes with a CMP purchase.

Well in that case, I guess I'll sell you mine. $3k and I'll even throw in an ammo can that has 300 or 400 rounds of loose 30-06. $4k if you want the rifle and two ammo cans.

Seriously though, check gunbroker.com. Here's a fair deal.

I have never bought a firearm without caressing it in my hands first. Will be tough to buy one online for me.

I know some of you boys have 3 or 4 Garands. You can only shoot 2 at a time so sell me one dang it!

My 1895G is an older model and ported. It kicks like a scalded mule and is LOUD.

I absolutely love it.

I'd love one of the Guide Guns. I used one years ago and loved it.

Unless something has changed, if someone acquired through CMP, it cannot legally be resold. Have to keep it or pass it down.

I have the 1895gs which is the stainless one. Sucker kicks like a mule and is loud, but I love pulling it out at American Shooting Center with all of the guys shooting ARs. I always get slow head turns then looks of shame. It's awesome.

If that was once the case, it's not anymore. The CMP's website even has a classified section and anyone with an email address can create an account.

If you think a Marlin 1895g(s) kicks like a mule with the ports, recoil pad and shortened barrel, try the run of the mill 1895. No ports, no recoil pad and 4" more of barrel.

Fun as all get out to unload, but a mule would be pleasant when I load up some hot rounds for this thing.

Mine isn't ported, actually. It's still a GS, though.

There's not alot of redtape, especially if you have your CHL. You are going to get a better rifle, for less money from the CMP than you will from Gunbroker. You'll end up dropping $200-300 more for the same quality rifle on GB.

There were resale restrictions at one time, but glad to know its been relaxed. Good info '02, thanks.

Just a variant of the lever action rifle built by Marlin.

Did you get a sewer pipe from CMP?

curious, would the garand be a suitable first purchase of a rifle if one wanted something reliable, and well suited to a wide variety of uses? in short, an all-around good companion to one's handgun? or is it really only valued for its heritage and/or power?

Well its the greatest battle implement ever devised if that helps.

i respect that, but i don't know if want a battle implement. people fall all over the 1911, which doesn't interest me for several reasons, although it does offer a modern user compelling reasons for ownership beyond the nostalgia. does the garand offer something to a person less concerned with the great history behind the object and more concerned with it's modern use/appeal?

If you think that kicks... try the 1895CB. No ports, no recoil pad, straight stock and 4" more MORE barrel.
