Got back friday from hunting on the longfellow ranch in west texas. the ranch and everyone there were awesome including the food, its 360,000 acre working cattle ranch owned by a oil guy outta dallas. supposedly he still wants to buy up more land. we had to drive 30 minutes from camp just to get to the pasture we hunted the first 2 days. everyone was great and our guide was the ranch trapper...he had some pretty cool stories. anyways, we saw tons of deer, probably 60-70 a day...the horn quality was just down a lot because of the drought. also, 60,000 acres of this ranch burned up. most of the mature bucks on this ranch this year are 135-150", and last year they killed 13 over 180"...the bucks were really lacking width as the deer I shot was one of the wider deer we saw and it was only 18.5"...they have had less than 4 inches of rain in the last 14 months.
my deer field dressed 137 and my friends field dressed 98 lbs...both were 7.5 yr old deer (at least that is what they said based on teeth). Last year they said the deer weighed 160-180 field dressed and this year they were 100-140 lbs.
we had a really good time and I popped this one from 286 yards...he was the best deer I saw that had forks on both sides. Its hard to believe so far this year this is one of the better deer killed and last year they shot a bunch over 180 and a couple over 190 B&C.
