AGGIE TURNS ACORNS INTO SCHOLARSHIP

VERNON, Texas – Andy Duffie, a 1978 graduate of Texas A&M University, is growing 500 seedlings from Texas A&M’s “Century Tree,” which he will sell to fund a President’s Endowed Scholarship at his alma mater. The Century Tree, a venerable, sprawling live oak, is a well-known landmark on the Texas A&M campus in College Station. It was one of the first trees planted on campus, according to the Texas A&M website, and it has been the setting for numerous Aggie marriage proposals over the years.

Duffie, who holds a marketing degree from Texas A&M, harvested 3,000 acorns from the Century Tree in October of 2010. Within weeks, 500 acorns sprouted. Duffie plans to sell the Century Tree seedlings to fellow Aggies in the fall of 2012 when the trees are 6 to 7 feet tall. Proceeds from his tree sales will raise the $100,000 endowment needed to fund the Century Tree President’s Endowed Scholarship.

As Texas A&M’s premier scholarship program, each President’s Endowed Scholarship is a permanent legacy which will benefit future generations of Aggies. The scholarships are awarded to top students who excel in both academics and leadership.

Duffie is confident about the future success of his project. “In my opinion, Aggies will think it’s pretty awesome to have their very own Century Tree – especially Aggie couples who were engaged under the Century Tree on campus. These trees will be little pieces of Aggieland growing in yards across Texas.”

As of this month, 120 of Duffie’s trees have already been reserved by Aggies eager for their own small part of campus history. The trees will be sold next fall for $250 each (or two trees for $400) and will be delivered to College Station for distribution.

The project’s Facebook page (Aggie Century Tree Project) shows pictures of the trees at different stages of development, and includes care and planting instructions. Trees can be reserved by contacting Duffie at centurytree@aggienetwork.com

Great idea!

I'm about ten years ahead of him, but I've selfishly planted most of mine on my own property.

I read this as, "he will sell the trees to fellow Aggies for $100,000."

My eyes are playing tricks on me tonight.

@Rock. 500+ trees (two years old and 6-7' tall) will be sold to fund a President's Endowed Scholarship ($100K endowment). That's correct.

Good luck but at 200 per tree that's a little steep for me.

My wife and I were engaged under the Century Tree in 1997! I need to figure out a way to get one out to California...

Great idea for a great cause!

Many thanks to Andy and all of those who are working to support the President’s Endowed Scholarship (PES) Program. Since its creation in 1968, the PES program has grown to include a total of 990 scholarships. Because these scholarships are endowed, they will support Texas A&M students in perpetuity.

The Texas A&M Foundation is a nonprofit organization that receives major gifts and manages endowments for the benefit of Texas A&M University. The Foundation provided $59 million to Texas A&M for scholarships, faculty support, leadership programs and construction projects in 2010.

I think there will be plenty of people willing to spend $ for a good healthy established Century Tree offspring.

I teared up reading this. I am so glad one of my fellow classmates took the initiative to do this. With all the drought this year I have worried about all the old oaks on campus and see many that seem in distress. Thanks for doing this and I will be contacting you!

Been doing this since 96. Have trees from all over the campus on my property. Glad someone is doing this. I suggested it years back to the forestry dept for the students to do for raising club funds but no one liked the idea.

Way to go Duffie!!

Heck, I thought $200/tree was probably under pricing them.

Howdy again! I know that your post was from 2011. But I now offer UPS shipping of seedlings and have several growing in California now. Please visit my web site (aggiecenturytreeproject.com) to purchase. The seedlings are one-year old, roughly 15-inches tall, and sell for $100 each. Shipping is $20. Thanks and Gig 'em!
