Ok, so what kind work the best? Thoughts? I would like to get a light (lbs) set that are easy to carry and set up in a hurry but offer good support. Open to suggestions thanks!

I bought a Primos Trigger Stick monopod last year and love it. I carry it with me on hunts where I'm walking or hunting ground blinds. It doubles as a walking stick. They make a bipod version that is even more steady for shooting.

I have carried a pair of Stoney Point Steady Stix for years. One of the best hunting aids you can buy. I use the 36" model for sitting/kneeling.

...picked up a set of these at the Houston Hunter's show yesterday. Obviously I haven't tried them in the field yet but it's a good concept and my "house trial" went well.

...and the price ain't bad either...

+1 for Stoney Point stuff. It's been good to me and held up to being tossed around and carried in a pack.

I have had the stoney points for a few years also and really like them. The primos trigger stick looks very intriguing and I may have to try it.

Thanks for the info guys, I will see if I can find some in the few stores I have around me, and who knows maybe I can find a deer to try them on this weekend! CA opening weekend is coming up.

I started using shooting sticks when I was about 14 yrs old.
I took two Sotol stalks and split them.
Cheaper than Primos!

Stoney Point Tripod! Works like a champ!

I've used a lot of things in a pinch. Sotol, downed limbs, etc.

I have a StonyPoint monopod now. I like it because it works as a walking stick, camera monopod (threaded top) or shooting stick. Not super steady for loooooong range shooting, but pretty nice.

One thing about most of the shooting sticks is that it's hard to rest your off side elbow to get really stable for long shots.

Only way I can get comfy for really long shots (500+ for me) is a small stock mounted bipod and a prone position. ...absent a really nice solid seated shooting rest of course.
