Looking at a deep sea fishing trip (gulf side) for October 13th. I have been reading a lot of reviews but wanted to get yalls opinion on a few things.

1) How long of a trip to take? (5-6 people are planning on going)
2) large charter or small boat?
3) pros/cons of number 2.
4) Can you recommend anyone for the guided trip?
5) What fish are prevalent during middle October?

I appreciate all the help. We haven't fished out of South Padre before.

Sorry, don't know anything about the offshore down there...inshore seems to get the bulk of the attention. I do know that last October the red tide was horrible and drove me off the jetty.

We are going out with Todd Lowry over labor day. Will let you know how that goes.

Worked on boats down here off and on for years and have fished with a lot of people down here.

Todd Lowry, my old next door neighbor, is a good guy, interesting for sure , and a good fisherman. He has paid his dues big time and if Denny if running the deck for him you probably have 50 years or more of experience working for you. They know what they are doing.

You can also try Bryan Ray, he is who I would recommend, he is the veteran offshore master on the Island. He downsized his boat, but might have access to larger boat, he was running a 32' Blackfin last I heard. He is tops in this area.

There is another guy doing trips out of the Sea Ranch, he posts on 2cool as SPItunadude or something.

You might also give John McIntyre at the Scuba Shack in McAllen a call, he also does offshore fishing and diving charters and is good to go and has a larger boat and will probably work with you on the price during that time of year.

That time of year the fishing can be really, really good. If the conditions are right there will be Blackfin tuna behind the shrimp boats not that far offshore. There might even be some Yellowfin mixed in as we have caught quite a few close in that time of year. Depending on the water temp/blue water you should see some dolphin fish and wahoo and there will be kingfish for sure. It all depends on the trip you book and what you want to do. Also, what the captain wants to do.

Be sure to haggle a little, as that time of year prices might go down a tad, not much, but a little.

Todd is interesting, that is for sure.....You will enjoy him, if he is in a good mood and "into it" that day he will be entertaining. I think a very experienced fisherman by the name of Denny is working for him and he is another good guy and has his own version of interesting.
