Cooley is an interesting case study. They used to be one of the premier cattle breeding operations in the region (if not state) but started putting exotics on their place as well. The cattle contracted diseases from the exotics and *voila*, most of the cattle had to be destroyed and the ranch went belly up.

I'm sure it's a little more complex than that, but that's basically the gist of it.

Frank Litterst used to say that when a good ranch got a fancy entrance and a swimming pool it marked the beginning of the end.

We used to hunt out there some and fished there quite a bit back when Bert Wheeler owned it. A couple of those lakes were just unbelievable. Big bass and tons of them. I think he sold it back in the early 90s. Was hunting there in a "ground blind" I put up made of camo netting one morning and I guess I was pretty well concealed because a young doe actually walked up from behind and ended up in the blind with me. Not sure which of us was more surprised.

it wasn't a family run business, it was a corporation. Eventually thye blow them and sell out.

What kind of exotics did they have? I've been in the exotic business for well over 10 years and have never seen a case where an entire cattle operation gets wiped out from some parasite or disease picked up from exotics. I've seen exotics running with just about every domesticated breed of animal, including my teacup Pomeranian that would attempt to run down any blackbuck or mouflon that came within 100 yards of my house. Does anyone have any specifics?

I just looked at their stock list and there's no species on there that sets off a red flag for starting an epidemic that would wipe out their entire herd. Wildebeests can produce a epidemic if a White beard and Blue beard cross. The hot zone is in the placental sack left on the ground when they calve. There are a few antelope species and several deer species on there, but nothing else.

BINGO! I did some reading and there's mention of a 'wildebeest accident'. I also found a pic of a wildebeest that someone harvested. Well, sounds like they didn't know what the hell they were doing. Money doesn't buy common sense...that's for sure. Well, I guess I get an A this evening in animal husbandry!

Thanks ursusguy. I found it too. That was one of the few culprits that I could think of that could have done that. That stuff will kill everything. Bad sh*t for sure.

I would be more than satisfied with just having indigenous (sp?) wildlife. Never have understood the need to bring in exotics, $$$ maybe, but obviously the total potential cost has to be considered.

Rhino, I don't think it "killed everything" (although I'm sure it would have eventually) but Cooley is so famous for their sales and for moving animals in/out of their facility on a regular basis that they were forced to destroy the herd.
