Had a 18ft majek with a slip ring "danforth" style set up with 3ft of 3/8" chain. Never had a problem with set or hold. Sold the boat years ago.

Now I am re-rigging my dads 16ft Flatlander. I am reading about how my old anchor is not good for holding on the types of bottoms mentioned in the title? WTH? It worked before, but maybe I was just lucky. Would hate to be wading and watch the boat drift away.

OB bay/shallow water fishermen.... what do you use as an anchor set up?

A danforth style anchor will work great in mud and sand. It's what they were designed for.

First result I got in Google:
quote:
Danforth Anchor: If anchoring on a sandy or muddy bottom you will want to use a Danforth anchor. The flanges on a Danforth anchor can dig well into a sand or mud bottom providing a secure hold. The Danforth is not effective in weed or rock bottoms.

A Fortress with an 8' chain will flat get it done.

Old Sarge,

HOLY SHEET, It seems I've officially found somebody else with same brand of boat as me. I was starting to think I was the only Flatlander left! Mine's about as basic as they get, 17.5 foot T/V. But she floats. Unstable as hell, but she floats. How does your dad like it?

Oh yeah, I second the danforth with chain, that's what I use in the bays w/out any issues.

The anchor pins are also quite popular. Not much help in water over about 5', but I almost never anchor in water even that deep. Also they are useful as a mini push pole. e.g.

or a diy version

A Shadow has two holes thru the hull. One just behind the raised deck in the bow and one in front of the raised deck at the stern. You have two push poles that go thru the thru hull fitting that you can use to anchor as well as position the boat. Simple, cheap and effective.

Three feet of chain is inadequate. 8-10 feet of chain and you'll be fine.
