I saw that episode this weekend. I don't understand why they had to use the kite. Why couldn't they just paddle along while dragging the "lure" behind the boat. And when I was growing up one of my old neighbors showed me how to use frayed nylon rope & no hook to catch gar. Similar concept.

Kites and helium balloons work good offshore, too. You can keep your bait right on the surface with no line visable to spook the fish. We use hooks, though. Marlin and sailfish require some steel to stay attached!
