I put 2 chickens under the house a couple of years ago. Our house is on pier and beam with only latticework on the outside. I figured that not only would the chickens put a large dent in the amount of scorpions around by eating them, they would take out all insects under the house, which would decrease the number of scropions attracted to my house in itself.
Not only did the chickens do that, they also were a source of food from the eggs, and kept the grass neatly trimmed around the house, so I didn't have to use a weedeater as much. The only downside was the poo smell, which was only noticeable when it rained. One was killed by a possum, the other died from the cold because she wouldn't go in the box I built her. I've been considering reestablishing my chicken farm with only one this time. I think it's enough to do the job but make the poo not smell. That's what I wanted to get the first time, but my wife thought the first chicken would want some company.
