The current roommate is moving out and taking the safe with him, so it's that time. I tried to find a good deal on a used one and/or to free up more cash, but here's the one I went with.

Cannon Scout Series 33
http://www.cannonsafe.com/series/scout/s33.html

It's a 48 gun safe, 585 lbs., 30-minute Fire Protection @ 1200 degrees w/ Electric Lock & power/ethernet/usb outlets, 33 Cubic Ft

Got it from Costco with driveway delivery sometime in ~4 weeks for 800 bucks. Figured it was too good of a deal to pass up.

At 60" H x 40" W x 25 15/16” D my biggest concern is fitting some of my longer rifles in there.

you gonna use a de-humi tube??

Awesome safe!! Are the delivery guys bolting that to the floor?

The delivery guys will basically drop it off and say "Good luck" but I have a dolly that can handle this size. I'll be bolting it down myself; it's going in the shop with exposed concrete slab.

AS for humidity concerns, I bought the generic Cannon tube (and a pistol rack for the door), but I think I'll use some of my jumbo silica packs in addition to the tube.
If any of yall can recommend a good electronic dehumidifier, I would be interested.

Cool! When I worked for academy we sold those cannons, make sure when you get it, you check it out, see that all is kosher and then call them immediately to set up that warranty!

Yeah, I'm not signing the freight receipt until I've fully checked it.

The door panel that came with the dehumidifier is a tiny little thing, so I've decided that I'm going to build my own. We'll see how that goes.. For now the plan is to use some steel pegboard and probably custom fab some pegboard accessories to fit pistols, magazines, etc.

do you own many rifles longer than 5feet?

I order my first one from Sams and it got dropped on its face during delivery. Bent up the opening handle and combo dial and there was a huge dent on the corner. I never took delivery and went down to Lonestar Gun Safes and bought there. Check it good when it gets there.

Well, with the top shelf, the height is shorter than 5 feet. Luckily I have a closet upstairs, near my room, where I can keep a few odds and ends.

Why does a safe need ethernet and usb outlets?

The USB outlet is just to charge USB devices. The ethernet is to set up a backup drive or small server that you want to be theft/fireproof. In this day and age, it makes quite a bit of sense. Keeps you from having to drill a hole in the safe like most people do, too.

HA, truthfully I didnt even notice the upper shelf! I removed mine to give me more room.

Yeah.. I'll probably be removing mine as well. Currently, I can fit all of my long guns on just one side of the safe, so I'll have the other side for shelving. I hope this door panel works out as well as I envision it.

Now that ... is smart

As far as I know.. Cannon is the only safe company that does that.

I have a strong place in my heart for Liberty safes, but Cannon does a hell of a lot to push the industry forward.

Lots of safe manufacturers have that option now. But, if you're storing media in your gun safe, you need to make sure the safe is rated for an internal temp of 125 not 350 like most gun safes. Anything over 150 (I think) starts to damage hard drives and discs.

Most of the shelves come with notches cut out for extra long rifles. I have a Shgarps rifle and have no issues with room for it. I even had enough room that I built and added an additional shelf above the factory one for additional storage.

I also have one of those Sentry breifcase safes that I pot all important paperwork in and store inside the big safe. Double fire protection - figure it can't hurt.

I would think that they could take higher temperatures than that if they weren't operating.
