Is this a grey fox? How common are grey foxes in Texas? I'm in Grimes County, and this fox has been visiting my game cam pretty regularly lately.

Yes it is a Gray Fox. They are very common. They can make some crazy noises too.

Even a Red Fox would be grey on your camera.

Between their ability to climb trees, and their odd vocalizations (mentioned earlier); that right there is another common Plano/Frisco/Allen mountain lion.

Taken a few years ago. Was in a tree over the entrance to Kimbrough Stadium in Canyon. Just snoozing away as the crowd came in for a soccer game.

We have seen them here in New Braunfels close to high school. Out by my sister's a few miles north of 306. My fil feeds a family of four in Kingsland. Pretty common. Cool creatures to watch.

Just an fyi--there were several foxes that tested positive for rabies not too far from there last year. Personally, I would not recommend feeding foxes.

Thanks Usus, I'll pass this thread along to him. He's feeding the deer, racoons, skunks, fox, doves, etc. Maybe this will be enough to stop him.

Well it's no wonder we've been killing them to make coats all this time. It's in the teens out there and he doesn't seem to mind a bit!

(Then again, I guess I wouldn't mind so much either if I had to run around at night to kill my dinner just to keep me and my family from starving to death. )

Guy got chased off by a couple of yotes stealing his food. He was just hanging out waiting for them to leave.

Saw one run across the north end of my jobsite in Hewitt just last week.

Josh that is a good picture. I still have never seen a red fox in the wild. My brother says there is one living in a pasture by his house but I never see it when I'm there.

To each his own, but I just can't bring myself to kill a gray or red fox. I get more enjoyment watching them.

Maybe it's because I'm getting old, but they do have a purpose and they don't bother the deer or turkey.

FYI, foxes are right up there with bobcats on killing turkeys.

I have an awesome mount on a Grey, and need a Red to go along with it.

I don't think Gray fox are turkey predators. They prefer mice, bugs, etc.

Red Fox yes, but there are not enough of them to make any difference in any turkey population.

In San Saba County, where my ranch is, you could kill off 1/2 the turkey population every year and you still have too many.

I see, maybe, 1-2 fox per year along with a few bobcats.

When you have 150-200 turkeys every day stripping all corn and feed from the deer feeders, it doesn't take long to build up a dislike for those lice ridden birds.

I just wish we had enough predators around to nock the population down to a respectable number.

they are very cool animals. Enjoy the pics. I wouldn't worry about it effecting game populations. I love watching them, don't think I would take one unless I wanted a mount.

We see them all summer long at night under the security light. Usually a pair, going to town on crickets.

Is that a Red on the bales?

Doc - what part of San Saba co? Kind of suprised you only see a couple greys a year. We see dozens. We have several that hang out around our shop that we can pretty much identify individually. No shortage of them.

Now bobcats, we might see one a year.

Turkeys = "corn buzzards"

If you know where the Cotton Belt Road is located, I am North of 190 and North of the Richland Creek.

As the crow flies, about 6 miles northeast of Richland Springs.

We do have one gray that stays around our old barn. You can tell it is used to people being around. It will let you walk up about 40-50 feet and just sit there looking at you.

okay. We're on the other end of the county off Cherokee Creek.

Funny fox story. Last September I was doing nightime deer surveys and pulled up to the shop to grab something. Anyway, there was about four foot rattler next to the cattle gaurd and I mashed his head with my front tire. I was in the shop all of five minutes gatherine some stuff up and as I drove out, there was one of local greys carrying off the rattler. He stopped in the road, looked back at me and gave me "thanks for dinner" look.
