i've got some area in my back yard where i had my garden...i am taking that up because it just does not get enough sun. so some of the excess i dirt i filled some holes in where my dog dug during the hot summer...so needless to say there is a bunch of bare area in my yard with loosed dirt...

should i try to seed this with some type of winter grass so that the dirt stays in place?

if i do seed will i be able to just lay some st augestine over it in the spring without having to till or kill anything?

and what kind of see should i use...dont want anything that grows in clumps...TIA

if you are going to seed, use Rye grass.

that stuff will be fried during the spring, and you won't have to use any pesticides.

zoysia might stay greed if you fertilize it, but more than likely, no it won't. sounds like you don't have it planted, and zoysia grass can take up to 2 years to fully develop, if seeded.

honestly, it sounds like you have a big problem. I would wait until spring and red-sod your yard with st. augustine. or overseed with rye and wait for it to dye off.

no not a big problem at all...i was just wondering if either bluegrass or rye grass would die in the spring so i could then just lay sod over top of it...basicallly i just dont want dirt blowing up on my porch all winter long

Rye grass is an annual, so it will die out, but probably not until May or June. You could always roundup it earlier if you had to. Be ready to mow a lot though. And I would disturb the soil some when you put down the sod to allow better rooting, no matter what you decide to plant.

Rye will work. Don't let it grow seed heads or you'll get it next year too.
