Had a problem with random dogs without collars around the feeders last year. What actions would you take?

if they are "chasing game" then i believe you can give them a dirt nap.

I had 3 of them come right under my stand and walk to my feeder opening morning of bow season. If I had a gun I would have blasted them, but for some reason I couldnt bring myself to put an arrow through them. I know, doesnt make much sense.

You should probably bring some food with you the next time, try and lure the dogs in. Put a collar on them take them home and you'll all live happily ever after.

Kill them if they are truly feral dogs. If they belong to your neighbor. Give him a chance to keep them pinned up before you pop them.

Yeah, they may be annoying, but if they're collared or you know whose they may be, at least make an attempt to give the owner a warning if you can tell who it is.

Grown deer, in my experience, don't like dogs, but aren't that intimidated by them, either. A deer can easily outrun a dog, and though a dog could probably run a deer to exhaustion, it simply isn't going to happen. Domestic dogs have easier ways to get food or entertainment.

Wrong. Dogs can and will run deer and kill them. Feral dogs are true killers and will kill for fun. They get a blood lust and will continue to run deer until they are stopped. I love dogs as much as anyone, but won't hesitate to cap one if it is chasing a deer. I have shot quite a few that I witnessed chasing deer just before shooting them. People who live in the country need to learn to pen their dogs and not let them run freely.

What about 2 of them with collars?? I've got as many pics of them as the dayum deer and hog pics...

I was reading up on this on TPWD website and came across this

http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/landwater/land/habitats/faq/law_enforcement/hunt23.phtml

By what I gather, it is illegal to shoot a dog running off wildlife.

Its one of those thing that nobody would probably ever find out if you did, but nonetheless seem illegal. I have never ran into a problem with dogs, so I dont know how I would react.

the example you posted is a trespassing issue. hunting dogs occasionally get away from their owners, but that's no reason to bust them. unclaimed dogs chasing wildlife or livestock are persona non grata.

OK this is a repeat of last year's thread. I guess it was time for it to come back. I will grab my popcorn.

WK,
I understand that, but who is to say the dogs did not accidentally get away from the next door neighbor, started chasing your deer and you shot them. For me it wouldn't be worth the legal battle if they found out.

Honestly I don't think I could plug a dog not knowing if its someones pet or not. I have 2 labs that have gotten away from me, I would have a hard time not beating the SH&T out of someone if they shot my dogs because the disrupted one day of their deer season. If it is a reoccurring thing, then do what you need to.

I like dogs, dont think I would have the heart to kill'em, unless I have to. Now if its a cat chasing my deer, they are toast!!!

No collar and I don't know them, they're dead.

Diesel, I would argue that there is a fair amount of ambiguity in the "answer" to that FAQ. That is in direct response to a hunting dog legally pursuing wildlife (i.e., a coon dog, bird dog, etc.) and not just some random ass dog running around the woods.

Anyone who has ever hunted behind dogs knows that it can be difficult, particular with coon hounds, to pull them off a hot trail.

That said, any hunter that can't tell the difference between a bird dog and a stray likely has some larger issues.

I agree Sean. The FAQ was geared towards the legal tracking of wildlife, not some dog that is out of his kennel or a feral dog running off deer. We use dogs to track hogs all the time, most people do know the difference between the two.

I would be pissed if some random dogs were runnin deer on a place that I invested money in. If it happened once, I can get over it. If it is an everyday occurrence, then take em out.

For me, I would make sure it was a stray/feral dog before I could put down someones pet over one hunt.

Either way, its the person sitting in the blind decision and I wouldn't judge or think any different of someone whether they shot the dog or not.

I got no dogs in the fight!!

Ive shot dogs chasing deer and ive let them pass while not chasing game. Also had some hounds come by running rabbits which was bad ass to watch.

I had some racing pigeons that were eating all my corn this weekend. Was it wrong to shoot them?

This.

If they were obviously strays I would put them down and not think twice about it. If I had to think about it they would get a pass the first time.
