A much simpler method to fixing the tang hole is to overbore it with a drill and then drive a hardwood dowel into it with some good wood glue. Drill your new pilot hole, then screw the screw in.

I've done this one a few occasions (some on firearms) and it's worked extremely well - very cheap and very durable. Just a thought anyway.

It's not screwing into the wood, it just passes through the hole. On the A-5 you have an upper and lower tang, and there's a bolt that passes through to the upper tang.

I'm afraid if I doweled the hole(I've done that before, especially with balsa when CA wont hold fine threading), I wouln't have enough material to keep the dowel snug without epoxying it anyway, especially with the size tolerances within the stock, and the specific angle it has to be at.

In that case, I would overbore and sleeve it with a brass sleeve epoxied into place. Most likely you would never have to worry about messing with it again.

I actually put a brass shim in just a minute ago. Looks like my thickness was off less than a 1/32, I may have a thin piece of brass I can tap in, or I may just bed the shim in and make up the space with bedding material.

I bedded a good solid half round metal spacer in last night before work, and all the slack is out now! I'm looking forward to the 9th(when I get PAID finally) and getting to shoot this gun for the first time in years(except the two test shots I fired into the ground the other night that didn't cycle.

It sounds like it just needs a good, thorough cleaning. Also, good job on the stock screw.
