I'll admit, I'm bored at work. This thread on the football board got me to thinking (one lucky dude)....

http://www.texags.com/main/forum.reply.asp?topic_id=1626972&forum_id=5

OK..feel free to call me crazy, but how awesome would it be (pipe dream I know) if some of us could chip in and purchase a school bus to use as a tailgate bus at football games and other events. With the blend of knowledge the people on this board have, we could make one hell of a bus. For example... I work at a machine shop that could make custom metal parts for it or do any welding that would be needed. I know some of the other OB posters are experts at installing kegs, and some are mechanics.

Where would we keep it? I don't know. Who's name would be in? I don't know...but it would be pretty awesome.

I found this one on eBay for sale for $5,500 in Florida. It says to be in good condition inside and out.

I own an RV storage facility in Denton, you can keep it there for free if I get to party on it.

I think you should be able to find one cheaper than that. IIRC, A&M was selling the old Thomas buses when I was there for like $1k.

Yeah, definitely a cheaper one. It doesnt matter what it looks like inside/out if you are going to remodel the entire thing. I have seen them with 250k miles in the $500-$1k range on auction websites before.

You can always find buses on here and they are usually much closer than Florida and much cheaper than $5,500.

You might consider the short bus so that DVM, tx4guns, and Sean will feel comfortable riding it.

There is nothing wrong with Partying on the Short Bus.... we did it for years.

Behold the power of the OB. I have this Bus in mothballs now. And yes that is a tap on the passenger side near the tailight by the T in Texas Aggies.

Centerpole,
That is a sweet tailgate rig. A good buddy of my brother has his name on it and I hung out with them there a time or two. I may have met you. That bus is exactly what I though of when I opened this thread.

If I remember correctly the bus was brought up from the RGV for games.

Well I edited this because I just checked your profile... guess I remembered correctly.

Thanks for the compliments guys, and no Easttex, right now we aren't tailgating Aggie games. It is in San Antonio at a friends house and he occasionally tailgates his kids games to keep it up. If you are in SA and have any kids in CYO you may have seen it.

A friend and I started the project in '04 and tailgated every home game '04,5,6,7,and 8. The group grew but the core of the group was from the RGV and after 5 years most of us eventually burned ourselves out on the 6.5 hour drive every weekend. Add to that many of us have kids now 9+ so they have games of their own that compete for home game weekends. I had hoped the party would take on a life of its own, so we could pick and choose when we could be there, but we never got there. I can't tell you how much I appreciate so many friends who worked to keep it going; but in the end we just needed our core group- the ones that held the larger group of friend together- closer to CS.

When we spooled down this past year my founding partner and I discussed selling the bus but I just couldn't part with it. Eventually we decided to keep it thinking maybe we'll return for at least a limited schedule.

That was part of the problem atm04; I couldn't put a value on it. A friend and I split the cost of customizing it; but I did the work. We hired out the recovering the seats, painting the outside, and putting on the glass packs; the rest of the work I did. For additional reasons I became so attached to the darn thing the thought of selling it just didn't seem right.

vogel... No. That was the tailgate RIGHT NEXT TO US! I'm laughing now because that day I asked them how much would it cost to get them to STOP. They showed up and started going to town and I thought "hell, I could have stayed home." Na, it was a great day... that was a big group of Animal Science students that tailgated several games near us and we had a large time together. We had some live music of our own a few times but mainly just a guy with a guitar and an amp.

One time some of our crew had been down at Round Top while their wives shopped for antiques on Friday. They got all drunked up listenig to some dude beat on a guitar at a cafe in Warrenton. They recruited him... he showed up after the game on Saturday and put on a helluva show.

Centerpole, I know exactly what you're talking about. We had a very successful tailgating bus bus for about ten years there - we actually started off right behind the scoreboard back in the day. When we started it none of us had kids and we were real gung ho, but as the labor started to decrease and everyone started to have kids...

I'd like to do it again but I think most people don't realize how much work it is to put on a party like that. Beer, food, tables, tents, coolers, music, tv's, satellites.... that stuff takes time to set up and tear down!

But we did have a total blast, no doubt about it!

I hear you Tailgate. I have a friend who was a JLot Aggie. They were getting out when we were starting up. He told me I'd look up someday and be cooking for over 100 and realize I didn't know any of the.... It never got quite that bad but on a smaller scale I could see it.

I admire my friends who are Aggie Diehards with the Church Bus; they've done a great job of keeping it going over a LONG time.

Jeezuz.

Was that the Baptist Church bus with the keg spigots on the side that made it's first appearance around the fall of '89?

That was my last football season as a student, and we were laughing are butts off pouring our beers from a Baptist bus. White with blue lettering if I can remember. And about 3 spigots on the passenger side. We literally smelled the beer before we saw it/what was going on. We used to pride ourselves on being able to smell beer in the air, like some do with the MJ.

I converted Greyhound buses to RVs for several years in college. I'd be happy to help. I'm in north Houston.

In fact here is a thread from several years ago when Brandon was considering doing the same thing. He wanted to use a sweet bus to convert. I'll see if I can find some photos of the bus he was thinking about using when the Crown deal fell apart.

Centerpole, would you be willing to rent it to us for home game weekends? If hoodlum has a place in CS to store it between weekends, it would eliminate the hassle of hauling it back & forth. We could all pitch in for the rental of it for the season, but ultimately would still be yours.

Remembering the times you had those years tailgating imo would make everything worth it whether the tailgate fell apart as in your cases or stayed together. I would love to put together a 10 year run like what you guys did.
