Just stuck a dual bearing levelwind, bearing supported cog gear, and a 4 bearing handle off a Revo Winch on my Ambassadeur 4601C3...

I guess that makes it a 4601C10...

It makes it much smoother on the retrieve and adds about 5-10 yards on a rat-l-trap cast...not too much difference with lighter stuff though.

an Ambassadeur 4601C3 is a fishing reel made by Abu Garcia that has 3 bearings (2 spool, 1 instant anti-reverse roller bearings).

It has a non-disengaging levelwind which means that the levelwind goes back and forth as you cast just as it does on a retrieve.

To achieve this the levelwind spins on 2 plastic bushings (major limitation of the reel) and the cog gear (one between the spool and the levelwind's idle gear) spins on a metal shaft. I put a dual bearing supported levelwind (which replaces the 2 plastic bushings with bearings) and a bearing supported cog in mine. So now all the parts that have to spin during the cast/retreive (spool, cog gear, and levelwind) are supported by bearings.

Also the handle paddle are currently supported by 2 plastic bushings. I replaced the handle with one that is longer for more torque on the retrieve and it has 2 bearings supporting each paddle (4 total in the handle).

plain enough english for you?

just need some real feedback.

it depends on what you want it for.

The 2010 Premier is flat out awesome. I love mine. I wouldn't recommend it for heavy hauling, but at least it is a light reel that you can use in saltwater without the frame corroding away.

The new SX is essentially the same reel as the old STX for less money...which makes it the best value in the bunch though.

I'm a huge fan of the Revo series. Abu does a much better job of providing LH models in their reels whereas Shimano has pretty much phoned it in for the lefties...

yeah, I'd like a 6:1 low profile reel between $150ish and $250ish...

I've got like 5 choices in the Revo lineup...and just the Citica (way less than $150 though) in shimano's lineup...

For that matter I'd like a 6:1 Curado (easily the most versatile ratio)...oh, I forgot, they killed that option after the 100D..

I'm not saying one is better than the other...but shimano's choice of gear ratio options alone is hurting their market share by allowing the Revo's to grab a foothold...

I've been told the Revos are great reels from a SHIMANO company rep for what it's worth...and this was from a Coonass who fishes mostly in the salt...

shimano does make the best gears in the industry... and it's not even close

I like how the Revos feel on a rod better than even the Curado/Citica E, and the Revos have a better drag stack (though nearly no one has a problem with Shimano's dartanium drags so this is pretty moot).

Golfer-

Are those upgrades available for the 5500 and the 6500? We used to replace the brass bushings with a Teflon bushing to aid casting distance and smoothness. Do you know if these are still available?

My primary reels are 2 Cruxis and a Citica but I picked up a couple of 4600C's for cheap. I have not had time to rebuild them.

Have you considered the ceramic composite bearings?
aggiegolfer03

trout, not sure about the teflon bushing. But especially for salt that would probably be the perfered upgrade to bearings (bearings add something else to rust, even "corrosion resistant" or A-RB's).

They sell upgrades to the 5500 and 6500 as well.

I don't think I'd bother with the ceramic bearings. You'd have to replace ALL the bearings with ceramic, which would cost a pretty penny. Kind of a weakest link sort of thing if one of the components can't spin as fast as another (which is what happens on the stock reel).

I got the parts from www.castawaylakes.com, but they are also sold from mikesreelrepair.com.

If using castawaylakes I recommend you call to place your order. They took over a week to even register that my order was placed when I ordered online. Mike's comes from Canada.

You'd think you wouldn't need but the bearings to do the upgrade, but the worm gear and even the fitting are unique to accept the 2 bearings. You do need everything that comes in the kit from castaway lakes. Mike's kits throw in the line guide and pawl, which is unecessary (unless you want to upgrade to a ceramic pawl).

I'd recomment just buying the bearing from a C4 (just find the size bearing that fits and order, don't get the "official" part) and the bearing supported cog if you wanted to upgade economically. You're looking at like $20 for that and that would take like 10 mins to do.

I also think you can cast too far. When the bait gets way out there, and you are fishing with mono, your hookset is almost useless at that range.

I like my Revo. Last time I was surf fishing, I was outcasting curados and citicas the others were using by a a good 10 yards.

overly fisherman?

is it simliar to this? no? i catch plenty with it. I upgraded the silver parts with some black spray paint i got at oreily's, it catches more fish now.

All kidding aside. the abass is an awesome reel.

Big Revo fan. I've liked them ever since I first saw one at booth at FLW. I like them even better after using them. I have 2 each of the old SX and STX plus an SC. I've been wanting a Winch. Haven't used a Premier or a new Orra S.

If you consider cost and features, I think the SX is the best especially since the new SX is basically the old STX. I like the adjustment on the side and the drag is solid. Feels good in your hand.

Don't buy a Max series thinking it will be like a Revo. They aren't.

But, can't go wrong with a 4600C3. I'm just a low profile fan.

if I did it would be LH retrieve anyway...but no.

Go ambidextrous like me. Then you can buy ANY reel on clearance .

It takes a little self-training, but in a few months, you can switch hands almost effortlessly.
