They are dioecious, you probably have a male tree.

+1 for cedar elm
don't know if they will do well in your area but it is rapidly becoming my favorite.

If you had pines, I'm guessing you had acid soil. I'm not sure how red oaks do in that situation. I'd lean toward a bur oak, cedar elm, live oak, or even a pecan. Pecans get a bad rap - generally it i a nutrient problem that causes all the little twigs to fall. I had 4 bif ones in Uvalde, and loved them.

Do Pecans require Zinc supplements?

It sure helps if the pH of the soil is high or very low. Zinc is one of those micros that likes it best between pH 6 and 7.5. Foliar zinc is by far the best route to prevent rosette.

Well we bought some trees!

We got a 15 gal Red oak, a 30 gal red maple, and a 15 gal. little gem magnolia.

We went to RCW nursery, a great place, they know their trees. They had a sale, buy 1 or 2 trees, get 15% off, buy 3 or more, get 20%..
the 20% off convinced us to get the third, we were only looking for 2.

Trees, delivery, and installation (with 1 year guarantee) totaled $705.

The 30 gal maple is a good 15+ feet tall, and the 15 gallon oak is about 12'. the little gem is around 6'

Thanks to all those that suggested trees. seems the red oak and maple was mentioned several times, and they look like they will be great trees, with beautiful fall colors.

FWIW, I have property in Montgomery county loaded with native red maples, and they are pretty trees in the fall.

quote:
i figured 100 gallons of dirt is nothing i'll be draggin across the yard!

Water weighs 1 g/cm3
Soil (depending on mineralogy) weighs 2.65 g/cm3 (quartz)

Translating that into English... Water weighs just over 8 pounds per gallon. I guess you also don't use a jack when you get a flat tire huh?

I suggest Caddo Maples for nice fall color. Stick with something native.
