Clearly you boys & girls can tell how busy my work week is. I'm basically just biding my time until I can fix a leaky faucet or hack away on some trees.... but while I'm at work I can at least make my life miserable by designing a house that I can't afford.

...what's the best (free) software out there TexAgs? Just floor plan stuff. Nothing super fancy.

I bought a couple of them a while back at half priced books. they aren't free, but I got them for @ 5-10 bucks a piece; pretty tough to beat that deal.

I have 3d Home Architect and it is pretty good. it isn't free but not bad.

Try Google Sketchup

It's a little challenging to learn, but well worth it if you've got the spare time.

First decide how many rooms, then decide on how many TVs. You may want a media room with multiple TVs. Or feel generous and put one in the master bathroom above the oversized jacuzzi tub for you lady...oh..wait.

Get a trial version of AutoCAD, do a preliminary architectural drawing of just the floorplan, then upload into Google Sketchup and do the elevations, walls, landscape, roof, etc. from there.

I think I've realized I'm much more of a graph paper & pencil kind of person than I am Google SketchUp. That program makes absolutely no sense to me...

Look for Revit. It's, um, cheap and uh, really easy to use.

I think www.floorplanner.com is free. I've used it before to set up audio equipment to make sure I had measurements and angles right

Google Sketchup, pretty powerful for being free. Look for some of the training videos that are posted somewhere on the web, actually a pretty cool program.

Chief Architect is the best. Expensive, but very good. If, by chance, you are in Singapore, go to Sim Lim Tower and get a bootleg version for around US$ 20.

I downloaded a copy of SmartDraw last night. It only lasts a week, but it's dumbed down enough that I can actually use it. (unlike SketchUp)

I was just there last year, wish I had known. Oh well, next time.

The demo version of qcad is good for 100 hours.
