Gold spoons or Pearl Gulp pogy minnows on 1/4 oz leadheads. You may want to use a short steel leader if the Smacks are up on the beaches.

big rods or little rods? go with the above if it's little rods. looks for breaks in the sand bars.

depends on where you plan on throwing lines and at what time.

if you bring a cast-net you will not need any bait. right now you should be able to see the shrimp in the water.

starting in the north surf, you best bet will be to have some fresh shrimp. guaranteed fish (alot of hardheads). mullet will work as well and both will be plentiful. artificially i really like weighted spoons in the surf, but with any lure you are going to need some weight to get those lines out there.

moving along more south, mid-city, shrimp again will work, but by this time there is significantly more traffic from a human and debris standpoint due to all the hotel traffic. this is uaully alot harder to fish in and i think the trash may keep alot of the smaller fish away and thus the bigger ones but i only have fished those spots in the morning when those previous points do not really apply. for some reason though, this spot is the most accessible but has the least amount a fish.

and then to the best part in my opion, the south-end of the island. again there is some traffic on the beach access points but other than that there are many open spots in between crowds. as you get to the very south end of the island where the channel is located, you will find the jettis. here you can go straight into the surf and find a spot to cast. God knows how many or how big the fish will boast. competitions have been won there and lives have been lost there. but the best bait will be what ever is around; every fish makes it way through that channel into the bay.

and here the secret. there is a boy scout camp on the very south end of the island. it is actually a boy scout adventure island but due to slow turn-over through the years it has ceased to produce enought volume to be considered a venture. you can walk a long the the jettis to get to a point in the island where the surf meets the bay. Right there i have spent many nights and days scuba diving and fishing along those rocks. sometimes theres is a 3 ft chop and sometimes the water is as clear as day. multiple and plentiful creatures will be found there so any kind of bait goes.

We will be using mostly smaller bait caster setups. I will be bringing the cast net to get bait. Gold spoons seems to be a favorite. What about topwater in the morning? In the mid-city area what gut/guts should I fish?

if you are going to go topwater in the morning bring two rods or three. two in stands with bobbers 18 in away from shrimp/mullet, and one rod for wading with lures. in the morning i would try something exotic since you never know what will be around. in the mid city there will be plenty of parking and bech access points that all connect on the surf.

Well we are staying on the beach in a condo so we have beach access. What's the best approach for trout? Bait under a cork? How plentiful are whiting there and is it possible to avoid them to just get trout/reds?

1. When we're talking about breaks in the sand br we mean spots where there is a gut or cut that bait and predator fish swim through --- slightly deeper gap maybe a few to 6 -10 feet wide.

2. Wade out to the 2nd sand bar if you fell up to it early in the morning. Blue water has been real close the last feew weeks and the weekend forecast is for more of the same. Offshore waves are forecasted at 1-3 feet and it's gonna be flat as a pancake in the morning Sat & Sun I bet.

3. If you're catching sand trout or whiting off the bottom and hit a good school, just start saving them up. It takes a few but those are the best eating fish out of the surf you'll catch. Filet them and take everybody to Palm St Pier on the bayside about 6pm and get them to serve them up blackened with all the trimmings. You WILL NOT be disappointed.
