Please. You don't have to know all the proper terminology in order to be able to handle a firearm safely.
1. Always treat a firearm as if it is loaded, even if you know it is not.
2. Never point a firearm at anything you do not want to shoot.
3. Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
4. Unload firearms when they are stored or transported, when you are climbing (e.g. into a stand) or when crossing a fence, creek, or other obstacle.
5. Do not rely on the safety.
6. Visually inspect firearms to make sure they are not loaded prior to cleaning them. While cleaning, make sure the action remains open, and remove all ammunition from the cleaning area.
7. When handed a firearm, do not rely on the person who handed it to you. Inspect the weapon yourself. Put the safety on, remove or empty the magazine, and inspect the chamber to make sure it is clear of ammunition.
8. Be sure of your target and what is behind your target.
9. Until you are ready to shoot, keep the safety on and keep your finger off the trigger.
10. Use only cartridges or shells that are designed for your firearm.
11. Do not use firearms while impaired by drugs or alcohol.
12. Keep firearms away from those who cannot be trusted to use them safely.
