My dog just ate and Ibuprofen and I'm tryin to figure out what to do. He's a german short haired pointer and weighs about 55lbs so he's not small. The tablet was only 200mg but i've heard about how bad it is for dogs. Do I need to take him to an emergency vet or just watch him real close for awhile? Anyone who's dealt with somethin like this, I appreciate the advice.

you can make him throw up with some hydrogen peroxide, call an emergency animal hospital and ask them if you should bring him in
or call the a&m emergency vet hospital, every time i have called they have tried to help me over the phone so i didnt spend $100 on nothing

one? Probably no big deal.
One tablet for a dog that size is not likely cause for concern, however just to be safe I would recommend giving him pepcid 20 mg every 8 hrs for 2 days. However, IF there is severe vomiting within 24 hrs, go to your regular vet.

Thanks for the advice guys i got him to throw up and he seems fine like nothing happened so ill just keep watching him.
Last night my beagle ate 2 tylenol cold tablets..so he had hydrogen peroxide for dinner.
I'm pretty sure the hydrogen peroxide is worse for them than the tylenol.
Besides, if you see what dogs usually eat, ibuprofen is not that bad.

My chihuahua ate a small snake whole one time. I called the vet and when he quit laughing, he told me to monitor his stool and make sure nothing "unusual" happens.

devil, you ever use the hydrogen peroxide? it appears to be much worse, but it works...kind of makes me want to try it on a person...
I just asked my dad who's a vet and he said if it's otherwise in fine health one 200mg shouldn't be too big of a deal.
I appreciate all the responses guys. He's doin just fine now so I assume it wasn't a huge deal. I know I could count on TexAgs for a good response though.
The purpose of the hydrogen peroxide is to make the dog vomit. When that happens, they don't actually ingest much because it all comes back up. You only give them a tablespoon or two.

Ibuprofen/advil is actually toxic to dogs and should never be used as a NSAID on them, same for acetominophen/tylenol. Aspirin is the only safe OTC NSAID that a dog can safely take....just thought you should be aware of that.

DVM97- a vet once told me to put 1/2 tsp of salt on the back of a dog's tongue as an emetic.

I've never recommended that, but have heard some "old timers" use salt as an emetic. I generally recommend hydrogen peroxide orally at a rate of 1 TBSP per 10-20 lbs for emesis, and it can be repeated in 10-15 min, if no vomiting occurs.

tin foil
I gave up after several trips to the vet and many x-rays. I told him to quit eating things that could kill him because I wasn't taking him to the vet anymore for that. He's still eating things and turned 12 last Oct.

This is gross for some of you but my vet told us about a dog he had come that had swallowed a feminine product (starts with a T and ends in 'pon'). Anyway, they're made of cotton and it swelled in his intestine (I think) and killed him. Be careful what your dog eats!!
Panties are always high on the list too it seems. ..and they do not digest well.
My dog ate magnets from a child's toy....died later that day...the magnets tore up the intestine and she became septic. Sad day.
On the other hand, my dog has eaten foam rubber ear plugs and they have gone through his system without a hitch. It's kind of weird seeing bright pink ear plugs in the yard.
A classmate of mine had an 80-100lb bulldog that ate a box of condoms, which were stored in the same drawer as dog treats. They looked rather odd on the way out.
